20 Safest Cities in Maine

Maine is home to amazing coastline views and world famous lobsters, but that’s not all. This is also one of America’s safest states. According to recent FBI Crime Report data, the state reported 1.2 violent crimes per 1,000 residents; that’s approximately one third less than the national average of 3.67 violent crimes per 1,000 citizens.

Residents of the safest cities listed below enjoy even lower rates of reported violent crimes, with an average of less than one incident of violent crime per 1,000 Mainers. The communities of Eliot and Richmond deserve special recognition, as they cited zero incidents of violent crime. Among the 20 safest cities in Maine, murder is an especially rare violent crime. In fact, 19 of the 20 cities that made our list reported no murders. In addition to an enviably low violent crime rate, Maine also reported less property crime than the national average.

We were impressed to discover Maine’s proactive and aggressive efforts to curb violence against women, which could contribute to state’s lower than average violent crime rate. Its STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant program helps communities develop creative and robust law enforcement and prosecution strategies to fight violent crimes committed against women. The grant also helps cities and towns in every part of the state strengthen their services for victims. Maine receives funding for the program through the U. S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women. It’s worth noting that FBI crime report data reveals more than half of the cities listed below reported no forcible rapes.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Maine

We produced our list of the top 20 safest cities in Maine by reviewing FBI Crime Report statistics of cities that had a population of over 3,000 residents in 2012. Next, we closely examined the number of Violent Crimes, consisting of robbery, murder, aggravated assault and forcible rape, as well as Property Crimes, which include burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, and larceny-theft. Then, to account for differing populations, we calculated how often these crimes occurred per 1,000 people.

It’s important to note that the FBI Crime Report is a distinguished source for crime statistics, but not all Maine cities reported complete data to the FBI. If there’s Maine city you think is safe, but it doesn’t appear on our list, the city leaders may not have reported all their statistics, which made them ineligible to be on our list.
