The 50 Safest Cities in New Jersey — 2016

Safest Cities in New Jersey

It’s hard not to love the state that gave us The Boss, Bon Jovi, and Frank Sinatra. In addition to its impressive list of musical talent, the Garden State also has one of the most educated populations in the country and boasts a fabulous shoreline. When you add in the stellar safety record of the state’s 50 safest cities, there’s no question that New Jersey is a great place to call home.

These New Jersey cities take the safety of their citizens seriously. Over 80 percent of the cities on our list are making their second appearance, and your likelihood of falling victim to a violent crime is less than one in 1,000 in every city we’ve recognized, according to the FBI’s most recent statistics. The incidence of violent crime is so low that 85 percent of these cities had fewer than 10 total violent crimes reported, and only one city had any report of murder. On top of that, property crime in 85 percent of our safest New Jersey cities was limited to fewer than 90 reported incidents.

Whether you love New Jersey for its many beaches or its abundant produce, knowing that residents and law enforcement professionals are working together to keep New Jersey cities safe makes it even easier to relax and enjoy the perks of living in the Garden State. If you want to help your city improve its safety record, it’s easy to get involved in safety initiatives. Our comprehensive New Jersey Safety Directory is the perfect place to start. See if your city made our list, and use these resources to help you protect your home, loved ones, and neighborhood.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in New Jersey

To identify the 10 safest cities in New Jersey, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 10,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “New Jersey Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
