The 10 Safest Cities in Vermont — 2016

Safest Cities in Vermont

Compared to residents of most states, Vermonters are more content where they live and have less of a desire to move. That’s not surprising considering Vermont’s dynamic beauty, its close-knit communities, and the fact that it’s consistently ranked as one of the safest states in America.

According to the latest FBI Crime Report, Vermont’s already low overall crime rate dropped more from 2013 to 2014 than any other state in the U.S. Specifically, violent crimes fell by 19 percent and property crimes decreased by 31 percent. The Green Mountain State is especially safe when it comes to the occurrence of certain violent crimes, having reported a total of just 10 murders and 70 robberies in 2014.

No matter where in Vermont you live, you’re likely safer than you’d be in most other states. But if you call one of Vermont’s 10 safest cities home, your chance of being a crime victim is remarkably low. While even one crime is too many, we were impressed to find that, on average, only three out of every 1,000 residents of these cities was a victim of crime in 2014. Our research further revealed that five of the safest cities in Vermont reported no murders, rapes, or robberies, and the state’s safest city — Waterbury — cited no incidents of violent crime whatsoever. We congratulate the citizens, leaders, and law enforcement officers of these cities for making them a safe place to live, work, and play.

Although Vermont is a low-crime state, it’s important to take a proactive approach to your personal and home security no matter where you live. Consulting the resources in our comprehensive Vermont Safety Directory is a great first step.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Vermont

To identify the 10 safest cities in Vermont, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 2,500 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
