BeON Light Bulbs Could Help Secure Your Home

Light bulbs will soon be able to do more than simply save you money, they might even secure your home. A company out of Cambridge, MA is developing a bulb that will help deter burglars by mimicking your behavior in your home.

It Tracks Your Every Move

The BeON Burglar Deterrent is designed to learn your lighting habits so that when you’re away from home, maybe at Christmas dinner with the in-laws or for a New Year’s Eve party, the bulbs will replay your daily routine and trick potential thieves into thinking you never left.

It works by inserting microchips into a Listener module inside the bulb that tracks the timing and pattern in which you flip your light switches. The bulb retains the pattern, then will turn the lights on and off in your home at set times to mimic your daily activities. To active it you simply switch the BeON bulbs into “away” mode through an app on your smartphone once you leave the house.

“We think people want products that solve problems, versus investing in platforms,” BeOn CEO Alexei Erchak stated in an interview with TechHive. “We wanted to approach home security the way the experts do, in layers. But we didn’t want to be just another video camera, or a motion sensor, or an alarm. Once an alarm sounds, the break-in has already happened; the emotional trauma is already there. The best home security starts before the break-in. So we embraced an unloved space—the security deterrent.”

Erchak and his partner began a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of reaching $100,000 by December 14. They’re less than $30,000 away after starting on November 4.

It Does More Than Just Turn On the Lights

Features of the light bulb include doorbell activation, meaning they’ll turn on your lights when the doorbell is pressed in a pattern similar to that which you would if you were home. For instance, if you came from the back of the house the lights might begin turning on in a back bedroom or living area, through the hallway and finally on at the front porch.

The current modular even provides backup power in case of an outage, as well as exit lighting that will light a path out of the home in the event of a fire.

Each BeON bulb works with your existing wall switches and includes Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, a microphone that listens for your alarms and doorbell and a rechargeable battery. They also provide 800 lumens of soft white LED light output, so they’ll save you money while keeping your home safe.

The current plan is to have the bulbs available in two designs: standard and recessed. The starter pack will be priced at $199 for the standard three-pack and $229 for the recessed bulbs, though more may be needed depending on the size of the home.

The designers are currently working on an additional Sounder module to provide even more security features in the future.

The BeON Burglar Deterrent light bulbs seem like a great way to add an extra layer of protection to your home security system. There’s nothing more likely to stop a burglar from targeting a home than seeing indications that someone might be home.

Burglaries tend to spike shortly after the holiday season, so pitching in to help with the Kickstarter campaign might be a great way to prepare for next year’s festivities. The current distribution date is planned for April 2015.
