While celebrating its 250th birthday this year, Florissant Missouri still touts a wide variety of qualities that have enabled the city to thrive and grow.
In a time when unemployment rates are fluctuating across the nation, new businesses are continually opening in Florissant. Cultivating an economy that can support new businesses is a great way to help those that live in the area thrive. New businesses often means new jobs and new jobs are an integral part of keeping a city, and a community, alive.
People outside of Florissant also recognize that it is a great place to live. Florissant was recently ranked the number one spot for the “Best Retiree Community” and was also ranked among the top 100 Best Places to Live.
Building a Safe Community
Florissant understands the importance of safety within a city. Not only has Florissant had an 11 percent decrease in crime rates, but a local hospital is also working to make 9-1-1 calls more efficient. The significant drop in crime and the increased efficiency in the emergency response system have both helped to make Florissant a safe and secure place to live.
Residents of Florissant are also active participants in the Neighborhood Watch program. This program has continued to grow throughout the communities within Florissant. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious behavior and provide any information about crimes that have occurred. Community members can help keep their communities safe and get to know other community members by taking place in the growing Neighborhood Watch.
Making a Safe Community for ALL Citizens
Florissant has recognized the members of its community with special needs and has developed policies and procedures to ensure that these members of the community are as safe as possible. Chief Lowery and the Florissant PD have partnered with Project Lifesaver to keep better track of those residents in Florissant that may have a tendency to wander. This partnership has enabled the Florissant police officers to learn the proper protocol for working with these citizens and ensure that they are able to make it safely home as quickly as possible.
The city has also created a Disability Awareness Commission, which is always looking for new members. Allowing community members, and asking community members, to be a part of this commission gives community members a voice in policy making.
Florissant is constantly making strides toward becoming a safer city and always looking for ways to develop and move forward. After 250 years, the city has grown, learned, and developed. We are excited to watch as Florissant continues to do such wonderful things for its community for many years to come.
