Louisiana’s Safest Cities of 2025

In our latest State of Safety survey, Louisiana residents reported some of the highest levels of violent crime and gun violence experiences in the nation. But there may be a silver lining—these experiences decreased year over year.

Meanwhile, some of Louisiana's safest cities continue to see declining crime rates.

We didn't have enough data to accurately calculate statewide crime rates for our 2025 report, but our annual State of Safety report reveals some trends in The Pelican State.

Except for a slight increase in concern about property crime, Louisianans told us they were less worried about crime in the 8 months prior to our survey compared to the previous year. Daily concerns about overall safety decreased the most, dropping from 69% to 56%, while gun violence concerns fell from 72% to 66%. Despite this positive momentum, Louisianans tend to worry about crime more than other Americans.

About 36% of Louisiana residents feel safe in their state, which is one of the lowest confidences in the nation (US 48%). They're also more likely to think crime is increasing compared to other Americans.

According to our State of Safety survey, Louisiana property crime decreased slightly in the 8 months prior to our survey and package thefts increased. Interestingly, Louisianans' concerns follow the opposite trend: they're more worried about property crime and less worried about package theft compared to the previous year's survey.  

• 63% of Louisiana respondents told us they're highly concerned about property crime, up from 61% the year before (US 54%). 
• Reported experience with property crime dropped from 34% to 31% in our latest survey, but it's still higher than the national average of 27%.
• The percentage of Louisianans who worry about package theft decreased slightly from 58% to 56% year over year, while the percentage of those who experienced package theft rose from 34% to 37%. 
• 38% of Louisiana residents told us they increased their security or safety measures in the 8 months prior to our survey (US 37%).
• Louisiana residents prefer to protect their property with security cameras (61%), firearms (41%), and security systems (40%). 
• Louisianans use security cameras more than anyone else in America except Delawareans (62%). 
• Louisiana residents use security systems more than anyone else in the nation except Texans (45%) and New Jerseyans (43%).

Louisianans tend to worry about natural disasters more than the average American. This may not come as a surprise given the state's history of devastating hurricanes and floods.

• 79% of Louisianans expressed concern about Hurricanes—the highest percentage in the country and three times the national average of 26%.
• 61% worry about floods—the highest percentage nationwide (US 34%).
• Louisiana residents are also among those who worry most about strong winds and extreme temperatures.
• Earthquakes are of least concern to Louisiana residents. 
• Louisianans were those most likely to have evacuated in the 8 months prior to our survey (LA 23%, US 9%).

Concern about and experience with violent crime remains incredibly high in Louisiana, with residents of The Pelican State nearly twice as likely to experience violent crime as the average American. However, our State of Safety survey results suggest a small decrease in violent crime across the state year over year. 

• Over 1 in 4 survey respondents (26%) told us they had a personal experience with violent crime in the 8 months prior to the survey—the second highest percentage in the US (US 14%).
• Only Kentuckians reported a higher level of violent crime experiences (28%). 
• 71% of Louisianans worry about violent crime, down from 73% the previous year (US 59%).
• Only Nevadans and Californians (72% each) worry about violent crime more than Louisianans. 
• 51% of Louisiana respondents use some form of personal protection, which is the third-highest percentage in the nation behind Alabama (53%) and Alaska (52%). The national average is 35%.
• Louisianans prefer to protect themselves with pocket knives (26%), firearms (25%), and pepper spray (16%). 

• 66% of Louisianans worry about gun violence (72%), which is the fifth highest percentage in the nation (US 57%).
• The percentage of Louisianans who worry about gun violence decreased from 72% the previous year.
• 19% of Louisianans told us they had an experience with gun violence in the 8 months prior to the survey, which is the second only to Georgia as the highest percentage in the nation (US 11%).
• The percentage of Louisianans with first-hand gun violence experience decreased from 23% year over year.
• 21 mass shooting events occurred in Louisiana in 2024, a decrease from 31 in 2024.

For the purposes of this report, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.

• 35 Louisiana cities met the criteria for ranking.
• Addis is the #1 safest city in Louisiana for the second year in a row.
• Violent crime decreased by 80% year over year in Addis. 
• Rayne and Patterson reported zero murders, rapes, and robberies.
• Four of Louisiana's safest cities saw year-over-year decreases in both property crime and violent crime: Harahan, Mandeville, Broussard, and Baker. 
• Tallulah had the second highest number of violent crime incidents and the second lowest number of property crime incidents out of the 10 safest cities.
