The 20 Safest Cities in Wisconsin — 2016

Safest Cities in Wisconsin

It would be difficult to get more all-American than Wisconsin. The Badger State is home to Harley Davidson motorcycles and the Green Bay Packers, plus it produces 25 percent of the nation’s cheese. Whether you want to hit the open road on a chopper or sit back and root for the home team with a cheesy plate of nachos, you can do so without worry in any of these safe Wisconsin cities.

Fifteen of the cities on this year’s list are being recognized for the second year in a row, including Oconomowoc and Mukwonago. These two beacons of safety are holding on to the two top spots again, which is no surprise when you see that Oconomowoc had zero incidents of violent crime and just 22 reports of property crime. Overall, only 10 percent of our top 20 safest cities reported more than 10 counts of violent crime and 90 percent experienced fewer than 100 property crime incidents.

Statewide programs like the Interoperability Initiative demonstrate Wisconsin’s collective commitment to public and personal safety. This program allows public safety officers from different cities and departments to coordinate efforts in real time during an emergency. Proactive tactics like this help these 20 cities stand out. However, you don’t have to live in one of our recognized cities to take initiative when it comes to safety. Our comprehensive Wisconsin Safety Directory has plenty of resources and tips to help every Badger State resident increase their personal and home safety strategy.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Wisconsin

To identify the 20 safest cities in Wisconsin, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 3,500 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.
If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Wisconsin Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
