Why You Need a Snow Plow

Even if you rent, people can sue you if they slip and fall on ice or snow on your property. Individual cities may also fine you if you don’t remove snow in a timely manner (usually 24-48 hours after a storm). While homeowners and renters insurance should cover this, why run the risk? Keep your sidewalks, stairs, and driveway snow-free or you could face a big lawsuit and headache.

If you’re expecting freezing rain or ice, invest in some ice melting salt and spread it on your walkways and stairs.

Alternatives to DIY Snow Blowing

Neighborhood kids and snow removal services are always an option if you prefer to stay warm and dry—and leave the hard work to someone else. Kids can be paid hourly and much cheaper than professional snow removal companies, but there’s liability to worry about. Professional services charge an average of $75–$100 for removing up to six inches of snow, but that can go up $30 for every half inch beyond that. However, you’ll have peace of mind knowing it’s being done right, and on someone else’s liability coverage.

Snow removal is an important thing to think about come winter, but so are freezing pipes, snow tires, and other cold weather woes. Read about how to prevent your pipes from freezing this winter, so you don’t wake up to a major disaster.
