Wal-Mart Announces the Removal of Harmful Chemicals From Products

Written by | Updated September 26, 2013

Earlier this month, on September 12, Wal-Mart announced it would start disclosing chemicals found in many product categories, while also phasing out 10 chemicals from its products. This is a big move for Wal-Mart and one that will make the world a safer place for you and your family.

But what does this move by the major retailer mean? Read on to discover who this affects and why you should care.

Wal-Mart’s Policy

Wal-Mart has always tried to offer safe, affordable, and sustainable products for customers. With this latest move, the company has committed to offer products that contain less harmful chemicals, including offering products that use more recycled materials, reduce fertilizer in agriculture items, and increase energy efficiency in products offered by Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs across the United States.

To some, this might seem like an unsubstantive move, however, Wal-Mart deserves credit for taking steps to make products safer for its customers. The number of chemicals being eliminated are a small number, but the action is deliberate and meaningful. Wal-Mart is going deeper to make sure safer alternatives are available. This action by such a major retailer is sure to have ripple effects. Wal-Mart executives acknowledge that this latest step is just the beginning of more initiatives to come.

“Clearly the problem is much bigger, but Wal-Mart’s announcement today appears to be a meaningful down payment on an enhanced chemical policy,” Andy Igrejas, executive director of Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families said. “We urge other retailers to both learn from and improve upon it.”

Mind the Store

Mind the Store is a program run by Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. The purpose is to encourage major retailers across the country to eliminate toxins and harmful chemicals from its products. The group was influential in Wal-Mart’s decision to make products safer.

Since its founding in 2009, Mind the Store has reached out to educate consumers, particularly moms looking for healthier alternatives for their families. Together with consumers, Mind the Store has changed the marketplace for baby bottles, cleaners, and cosmetics, to name a few. The Mind the Store campaign’s goal is to reach out to the 10 biggest retailers in the country, including Wal-Mart, to get tough on 100+ hazardous, toxic chemicals.

You and Your Family

So what does all of this mean for you and your family? Simply put, it means you can trust the products you buy at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club to be safer for your family and the environment. Some of the products that are on the list to be safer at Wal-Mart include cleaning products, baby products, personal care products, and cosmetics.

The items you use to take care of your home, pamper your babies, and take care of your personal needs will now be safer for your skin, your home, and the air your breath. Chemicals contribute to allergies, ozone depletion, and skin irritabilities. Toxins in our environment can cause us to age faster, get sick, and to generally feel unwell. With the removal of harmful toxins and chemicals in products you use every day, you can rest assured that you are doing more to preserve your health and your family’s health.

You can now feel good about buying products that are good for you, while still saving your family’s budget. There’s no need to shop around at various specialty shops or to go without products your family enjoys. Your local Wal-Mart will offer you safe products at affordable prices.

What You Can Do

If you want to take part in helping to make products safer for families, you can visit the Mind the Store website and voice your opinion. You can tell the nation’s top 10 retailers that you don’t want to see toxic chemicals in the products you buy. The voice of one person can make a difference. You can also help by:

  • Reading labels. Make sure you know what is in the products you buy for your family.
  • Speaking up. In addition to voicing your opinion on Mind the Store, you can also talk to your family and friends about the importance of taking chemicals off the store shelves.
  • Writing to your state representative. You can also write a letter to your Congressman or Senator to express your concerns about toxins and our environment.

Wal-Mart’s move to remove chemicals and make products safer for our families is one that should be commended. Be thankful that Wal-Mart has taken such a bold stand, but continue to speak up so real change can be made across the country. Are you ready to take a stand against harmful chemicals?
