How We Chose the Safest Cities in Alabama

To find the 30 safest cities in Alabama, we followed a multistep protocol. First, we narrowed the list down to cities with a population of more than 2,500 residents in 2012 and analyzed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics. Next, we took a look at the number of reported Violent Crimes (murder, robbery, aggravated assault, and forcible rape) and reported Property Crimes (burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, and larceny-theft). Last, to level the playing field, we determined the chance of each crime happening out of 1,000 people.

It’s important to understand that some of Alabama’s law enforcement jurisdictions may not have reported complete data to the FBI. If an Alabama city you think is safe doesn’t appear on our list, it may be because the FBI did not receive complete crime data, which means we removed it from consideration.
