The 20 Safest Cities in Arizona — 2016

Safest Cities in Arizona

Arizona is famous for its natural splendors, rich history, and timeless traditions. It also offers low unemployment rates and strong job growth — particularly in the technology and bioscience industries. And when it comes to safety, Arizona is making great strides. Over the last year, the crime rate in Arizona decreased by nearly nine percent, and murders and burglaries went down by 10 percent each. While that’s quite an accomplishment, the residents of Arizona’s twenty safest cities experienced even less crime. According to the most recent FBI Crime Report, the chance of being a crime victim in one of these cities was 40 percent less than the national average. Furthermore, one-quarter of the state’s safest cities reported less than 10 total violent crimes and four cited no occurrence of murder, rape, or robbery whatsoever.

Whether you’re looking for the ambiance of a small town like Pima or Wellton or prefer the energy of a bigger city like Gilbert, there’s a good chance you can find a safe city to call home in Arizona. In addition to ranging in size, the communities on our list are located in nearly every part of the state. Discover more about the cities that made our list, then reference our Arizona Safety Directory for in-depth safety and security information — including an interactive map of the least (and most) burglarized counties in the state.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Arizona

To identify the 20 safest cities in Arizona, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 2,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Arizona Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
