The 20 Safest Cities in Illinois — 2016

The Safest Cities in Illinois

Nicknamed the Prairie State, Illinois offers sweeping landscapes dotted with small, quaint towns — in fact, farms still cover a remarkable 75 percent of its land area. On the other end of the spectrum, however, Illinois is also home to Chicago, one of the nation’s most populated and bustling cities, and the second best city in the U.S. for small businesses.

Whether you live in one the state’s rural or urban communities, you can feel good knowing that, overall, crime is on the decline in Illinois. In fact, the most recent FBI Crime Report states that incidents of violent crime and property crime each decreased by nearly 10 percent from 2013 to 2014. Comparing the latest Illinois crime data to information for the year 2000, we found that reported violent crimes dropped by an impressive 42 percent and property crimes fell by approximately the same amount.

Overall, the chance of being a victim of crime in Illinois is slightly less than the national average. Taking a closer look at the 20 safest cities in the state, we found that 16 of the 20 cited fewer than 10 violent crimes, and two communities — Hawthorn Woods and Winfield — reported no violent crimes at all.

Illinois is making great strides in reducing its crime rate, but even if you live in one of the state’s safest cities you need to be mindful of your personal safety and home security. Review our Illinois Safety Directory to find a variety useful information, ranging from crime prevention guides to a map of the state’s most and least burglarized counties.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Illinois

To identify the 10 safest cities in Illinois we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 5,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Illinois Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
