The 20 Safest Cities in Indiana — 2016

The Safest Cities in Indiana

The birthplace of James Dean, John Cougar Mellencamp, and the King of Pop, it’s hard get more all-American than Indiana. This Midwest gem is home to the Indy 500, the IU Hoosiers, and miles of sandy beaches at Indiana Dunes State Park. Indiana’s patchwork of farms hearkens back to a simpler time when neighbors were friends and people looked out for one another. Those heartland values are still alive and well in the Hoosier State — especially in our 20 safest Indiana cities.

Our number one city, Ligonier, reported just one violent crime during the FBI’s last reporting period. As this city has grown into a thriving industrial center, it has stayed true to its roots as a close-knit railroad town. The other cities on our list reflect the same commitment to keeping residents and property safe. Fourteen of these cities are being featured for the second year in a row, and more than 50 percent of them reported zero incidents of murder or rape. There were no reports of arson in 80 percent of Indiana’s safest cities, and the overall rate of property crime is fewer than 15 instances per 1,000 people in 17 of them.

Indiana is a state decorated with cornfields and the highest concentration of covered bridges in the Wabash River Valley. Rounding out this Norman Rockwell imagery are the security-minded citizens of the safe cities that made our list. Whether you call one of these cities home or not, it’s important to take steps to protect your property and loved ones. Our comprehensive Indiana Safety Directory has security resources and crime prevention tips to help every Indiana resident make a difference when it comes to the safety of their community.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Indiana

To identify the 10 safest cities in Indiana, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 4,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Indiana Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
