The 20 Safest Cities in Maine — 2016

Safest Cities in Maine

Miles of stunning coastline and abundant parkland make Maine one of the nation’s most beautiful states. But that’s just the start of what it has going for it. As a whole, it’s also an exceptionally safe place to live — which could be one reason Mainers tend to enjoy a high quality of life.

The most recent FBI Crime Report indicates that Maine’s crime rate is about one-third less than most states. Specifically, Maine experienced 21 crimes per 1,000 residents in 2014, whereas 31 crimes per 1,000 people took place nationally. Among the state’s 20 safest cities, however, crime occurred even less frequently. In fact, these cities reported a mere four crimes per 1,000 citizens on average. Furthermore, six of the cities on our list reported no murders, rapes, or robberies, and only one city cited a murder. As if that’s not impressive enough, 75 percent of Maine’s 20 safest cities are receiving this commendable designation for the second year in a row.

If you’re looking for a place to call home where you won’t have to worry much about crime, the 20 safest cities in Maine are certainly worth considering. This guide covers topics ranging from emergency preparedness to home security, and includes a color-coded map that shows which Maine counties experience the least, and most, burglaries

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Maine

To identify the 10 safest cities in Maine, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 3,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Maine Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
