The 10 Safest Cities in Montana — 2016

SafestCities in Montana

Montana is a diverse state that offers something for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy nearly endless opportunities for recreation, entrepreneurs benefit from a business-friendly climate, and corporate ladder climbers have access to well-paying jobs. With all Montana has to offer, it’s not surprising that the state consistently ranks as one of the nation’s Best Places to Live the American Dream.

Plus, as a whole, Montana is a safe state to call home. The latest FBI Crime Report reveals Montana’s violent and property crime rates are on par with the national average — but we uncovered several cities in Big Sky Country where the occurrence of crime is much lower. In fact, the average overall crime rate of Montana’s 10 safest cities is half the national and state average. Roughly 80 percent of the cities that made our list cited 10 or fewer violent crimes in 2014, and only one city reported a murder. The incidence of burglary was also impressively low, with nine of the 10 cities on our list reporting less than a dozen break-ins.

From the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, there are many safe places to live in Montana. Find out more about the cities that made out list, then take a look at the resources found in our comprehensive Montana Safety Directory. In addition to crime prevention and emergency preparedness tips, you’ll find a color-coded map highlighting the most and least burglarized counties in the state.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Montana

To identify the 10 safest cities in Montana, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 2,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
