The 50 Safest Cities in Texas — 2016

Safest Cities in Texas

From hometown crowds enjoying the Friday night lights to jars of delicious sweet tea and Austin’s mouthwatering barbecue, there are plenty of big reasons to love Texas. Some of the best country singers of all time — including Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Miranda Lambert — hail from the Lone Star State. It’s also one of the most affordable places to put down roots, and there’s no state income tax. If you’re not on the road to Texas yet, the outstanding record of its 20 safest cities may just be your deciding factor.

All but one of Texas’ safest cities of 2016 are making their second appearance on our list. According to the most recent FBI Crime Report, these cities reported fewer than 20 incidents of violent crime on average, which is a rate of less than one in 1,000. Additionally, 15 of the safest cities reported zero murders, and seven reported no robberies. These Texas cities value their property along with protecting their citizens. There is less than a one percent chance that someone in these cities will be victim to a property crime. These safety records become even more impressive when you learn that every city on our list has a population of more than 10,000, and the average population is close to 26,000.

They say that everything is bigger in Texas — and that appears to be true when it comes to its community commitment to safety. Find out if your favorite Texas city made our list, and learn how to increase the safety of your home by checking out our extensive Texas Safety Directory.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Texas

To identify the 10 safest cities in Texas, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 10,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Texas Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
