Gabb is one of our favorite kid-safe technology brands, with easy-to-use smartwatches and phones designed to cater to the evolving needs of tweens and teens while safeguarding them from the perils of excessive digital exposure and social media.

We adults are obsessed with our smartphones, so it only makes sense that our kids want one, too. But with social media and open browsers comes a lot of inappropriate content and wider access to the world (which includes friendly and malicious users alike), so it's important to decide if your child is ready for a smart phone or a smartwatch.

“We want teens to be less reliant on screens...We want teens to use this new phone [or watch] as a safer way to connect with family and friends. Then we want them to put it down and build their very best selves through time spent away from their phones. This is always the goal for each of our products.

-Nate Randle, Gabb CEO

According to the National Institute of Health, around 53% of children have a smartphone by age 11.1 Considering the U.S. Surgeon General's advisory for children using social media and digital content, it's important to be cautious.

Your child may not be ready for a smartphone phone until the age of 12 or older.

Ultimately, it comes down to you and your child and how you want to handle access to the internet. Our favorite devices for kids strike a balance between features kids love and age-appropriate guardrails set by parents. Gabb makes it easy with pre-installed apps and no internet browsers or social media apps.

Should I get my child a smartwatch or phone?

While maturity varies from child to child, we generally recommend smartwatches before a phone, for kids in elementary and early middle school. They should be old enough to take care of the device and use it without too much distraction.

Our testing highlights

Our testers consistently describe the Gabb Watch as easy to set up and use. The watch includes must-haves like location tracking, safe zones, reminders, and text and voice communication while blocking access to social media, internet browsers, and dangerous apps. Parents tell us the Gabb Watch has a good blend of features for the price—but they think Gabb could improve its parental contacts. One mom couldn't add her husband with the same control and access she had and it was frustrating.

For kids, the real highlight of the Gabb Watch is Gabb Go—a clever way to motivate kids to do their chores and get off the couch. It's cute, simple, and a big hit with our group of testers.

Gabb is offering a free accessory with the purchase of any device.

Here's how Gabb Go works: kids earn virtual coins by completing their to-do lists (which you delegate through the parent app) or reaching step goals. They can spend those coins to care for a virtual pet, teach it tricks, and add even more pets (including a T-Rex and a unicorn) to their menagerie.

Gabb periodically releases new pets, which helps keep the game fresh.

Thoughts from a Gabb Dad
"We’ve had a Gabb Watch for our 9-year-old daughter for almost two years. We love that we can give her some independence and freedom while still feeling like we’re able to keep her safe. Our favorite thing about it is that she can only call and text with preapproved contacts. We’ve loved the Gabb Watch and are planning on upgrading her to the Gabb Phone in a few months and handing the watch down to our son." —Kyle L.

Thoughts from our tester
"You can decide what and who goes into the phone. You have control over that so they can't just be dialing out random numbers. If they're going out with friends, I'll add the friend's mom or dad to the contact list, just in case."

How to choose a device for your child

Balancing cost, functionality, and protection is essential for making a smart investment in your child’s device.

  • Consider your child’s age and maturity:
    • Younger children may only need basic features like calling and texting for emergencies.
    • Older kids might require advanced options for schoolwork and socializing.
    • Assess your child’s ability to handle the responsibility of a smartphone.
    • Look for phones that can adapt to your child's changing needs over time.
  • Focus on safety and parental controls:
    • Choose a phone with strong parental controls for monitoring messages, limiting screen time, and blocking unknown callers.
    • Consider phones that include only apps for kids and don't have access to an app store. Those that do include an app store should require parental approval before any app can be downloaded.
    • Make sure the phone has tracking and geofencing if you want to know where your kiddo is at all times.
  • Evaluate budget and durability:
    • Look for affordable, durable phones that can withstand drops or accidents.
    • Consider the cost of a phone plan, ensuring it meets your child’s data and usage needs.
  • Think about connectivity:
    • Look for a phone that uses a cellular network with good coverage in your area.

Gabb devices FAQ

Yes, the Gabb Watch has a virtual pet game that encourages kids to develop care routines, accomplish real-world tasks set by parents, and complete daily step goals. You can’t download any other games to the Gabb Watch.

Yes, a few drops won't hurt the 3e, but it shouldn't be submerged in water.

Yes, you can send regular texts and emojis, preset texts, voice messages, and speech-to-text messages using the Gabb Watch 3e.

The Gabb Watch does not have music, but the phone does. Gabb Wireless does have a kid-friendly music streaming service called Gabb Music+ that is available with a Gabb Phone 4 or 4 Pro with an Advanced Plan.

Find out how Gabb's smartwatch compares to similar watches in our Best Kids Smartwatches Guide. You can also compare the Gabb kids watch to Verizon's Gizmo watch in our Verizon Gizmo Watch vs Gabb Watch review.

No, the Gabb Watch does not pair with any Gabb phone. If you give your kid both devices, they’ll have two different phone numbers.

The safest phone for a 10-year-old is one without a default internet browser with plenty of built-in protections. The Gabb phone 4 (not the pro version), is a safe option for a 10-year-old because it has no internet access or social media apps. It also has smart message filtration, GPS tracking and parent-enabled apps. If you want to try a kids smartwatch first, check out the Gabb Watch.

Both phone models keep kids safe no internet browsers or social media apps. The main difference between these two models is the Gabb Phone 4 is a basic model, meant as a first smartphone for younger ages (9-13). Gabb Phone 4 Pro is meant for older teens (ages 14-18), with more advanced features like parent-enabled third-party apps, and also has a more powerful camera, a larger screen with higher resolution, and a larger battery.

We found Gabb Phone 4 Pro to be the most user friendly kids smartphone compared to the other top kids smartphones on the market. Most phones designed for kids and teens have their own cellular networks (like Gabb and Bark), but some are compatible with major carriers. Gabb is pretty affordable compared to other kids phones because they offer discounted rates for multi-line monthly plans.

How we reviewed Gabb devices

Closeup look at the back of the Gabb watch.

Image: Gabb

To test the Gabb Watch's appeal, user-friendliness, and location accuracy, we asked two moms to try it out with their elementary-aged sons.

We asked them questions like:

  • Was it easy to set up the watch?
  • What features did you like best? What features did your child like best?
  • Is there anything you wish was different about the watch?
  • Did location tracking seem accurate?

Then we pitted the Gabb Watch’s specs and features against our lineup of the best kids smartwatches. We also browsed Gabb Wireless’s support portal to learn more about the ins and outs of this GPS watch. Finally, we spoke to real Gabb Watch 3e users and read hundreds of customer reviews from Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and Amazon.

For our Gabb Phone 4 and 4 Pro reviews, we compared its features and specs to each other and other kids' smartphones. Our hands-on testing is in progress, and we'll update you as we gain more experience

Why we recommend Gabb's watch and phones

Watch

We recommend starting with Gabb's Watch 3e for kids under 10. It's is one of the most affordable watches out of our comparison of kids' smartwatch brands. It also offers more contacts than other brands.  Overall, we’re impressed with the Gabb Watch’s balance of features and affordability.

Phones

If your kid is older and already has a smart device, the Gabb Phone 4 is a good starter phone for ages 10 and up. Start looking at other options by age 14 or 15.

The Gabb Phone 4 Pro is an excellent choice for teens. We highly recommend this phone if you want to keep your teen off of the internet while still allowing them to listen to music, take photos, message friends and use safe apps.
