Whether you want to keep your packages safe at your front door or see visitors, video doorbells deliver high quality security. You get surveillance, two-way talk, and motion alerts all in one compact camera, which can be connected to a home alarm system where professionals are on standby in case of an emergency.

SimpliSafe's doorbell is easy to install and set up, and using it is as easy as opening the SimpliSafe app. Fortunately, simple doesn't mean poor quality. You'll enjoy crisp images, clear night vision, and good audio quality without being bogged down by too many settings.  It also supports Active Guard, SimpliSafe’s live monitoring and protection service, which allows real-time response capabilities to help prevent theft before it happens.

There’s no question that a doorbell camera, as part of a home alarm system, deters crime and can increase the odds of catching a burglar if your home gets broken into. If you can do only one thing to improve your home's security, adding a video doorbell to a monitored home security system is a great place to start.

Reviews: Best video doorbell cameras

1. SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro: Best DIY doorbell

Best DIY doorbell

If you are interested in getting a SimpliSafe home security system, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro is the best option for front door surveillance. It's easy to install yourself and uses human detection to cut down on false alarms.

Because SimpliSafe promises to keep home security, well, simple, you won't encounter too many settings to fiddle with. And while the video quality is good, we did run into few hiccups, like lag time, during testing. That said, it's more affordable than ADT's Google Nest Doorbell or Vivint's Doorbell Pro, and has a higher weatherproof rating.

2. Vivint Video Doorbell Pro: Best theft prevention

Best overall

The Vivint Video Doorbell Pro is an ideal pick for anyone wanting to deter package thieves, thanks to its package detection and Smart Sentry features. We also like the simplicity of its Vivint app.

While this Vivint camera has many of the same features as other doorbell cameras, like two-way talk, night vision, and motion detection, one stood out: Smart Sentry. If you’ve ever battled with porch pirates stealing packages from your porch, then you’ll like this feature as much as we do.

If Smart Sentry detects someone on your porch, the light on the smart doorbell turns red and flashes, and the doorbell emits a high-pitched whistle (or you can customize it to another sound) to scare away any would-be thieves. Even better, the doorbell security camera says, “Camera recording,” loudly.

Easy monitoring customization

This smart doorbell camera offers you more ways to customize the motion sensor than most cameras. You can create motion zones that are triangles, rectangles, or squares so you can easily map the exact area that you want monitored.

3. Cove—Eufy Video Doorbell 2K: Best value

Best local storage

If you'd rather not send video to the cloud, the Eufy Video Doorbell 2K is available with a Cove DIY home security system. It's the only smart video doorbell on our list that doesn't require you to send footage over the web, and boasts some of the best video quality of any doorbell cam. Compared to standard 1080p, its 2K video has more than double the number of pixels. This means clearer video, especially when using digital zoom or a TV to view your footage.

The Eufy doorbell's people recognition feature distinguishes visitors from passing objects to minimize false alarms. And its face detection tells you when someone's face is on camera. (This is different from facial recognition, which tracks specific faces.) Plus, this video doorbell cam is easy to install with or without doorbell wires, thanks to its built-in battery.

ADT teamed up with Google Nest to offer its customers some of the best security cameras on the market. The Nest Doorbell outperforms rivals with smart motion detection and cloud storage that don't cost a dime. Most other brands lock one or both of these behind a paywall, so your best experience always costs extra.

True, Nest's paid plans still have exclusive features like e911, facial recognition, and extra cloud storage, but you're not paying for essential features like motion zones, person detection, and rich notifications.

The Nest Doorbell is one of the best choices for anyone building a Google smart home. While its one of the pricier options on the market, it makes up for the higher price with subscription-free video storage and dynamic smart detection that can differentiate between packages, people, animals, and vehicles.

Doorbell camera FAQ

If you already have a home security system, or plan to get one, consider getting a doorbell camera through your provider. ADT, SimpliSafe, Vivint, Cove all sell doorbell cameras compatible with their equipment.

Having a record of your visitors helps identify any suspicious characters who stop by. Video recordings of an incident boost your chances of finding the suspects who stole packages, vandalized your home, or attempted to break-in.

Depending on whether you opt for monthly cloud storage or not, doorbell cameras can record as little as three hours and as many as 180 days. The amount of memory you need for footage depends on how often you check your doorbell app.

Most doorbell cameras use motion detection to record short clips. Still, the Nest Doorbell (Wired) has an option to record 10 days of continuous video if you pay for the Nest Aware Plus cloud storage plan.

Under daytime conditions, the average video doorbell can see your front sidewalk without many issues. At night, you can expect great image quality 10 to 20 feet away.

Look for a video doorbell camera with at least a resolution of 1080p. If you want a camera that shows your doorstep the way you see it, look for a field of view of at least 120°. Still, fields of view around 160º are ideal for seeing beyond your porch.

While all doorbells on our list have excellent infrared night vision, Cove's Eufy Video Doorbell 2K is a top performer.

Two-way audio is a standard feature in doorbell cameras; it lets you chat with visitors on your doorstep whether you're home or not.

We also like prerecorded messages and noise cancellation. Prerecorded messages are a lot like voicemail for your wireless doorbell camera—an automatic message that plays when you can't answer the door.

Noise cancellation is also helpful because it boosts the audio quality and makes it easier to understand what the other person is saying.

How we reviewed video doorbells

To choose the best smart doorbells, we pored over technical specs and thousands of customer reviews for 34 products. We compared features, price, reputation, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

After we narrowed the camera doorbells down to the best of the best, we pitted them against one another—looking for video quality, smart motion detection, customization options, ease of installation, and any extra costs required. We also spoke with customers who own these video doorbells.

Why we recommend SimpliSafe's video doorbell camera

Whether you want to watch for a porch pirate stealing your packages or see who's at the door without getting up, a video doorbell brings an extra touch of security to your front door.

SimpliSafe home security has come a long way from its “set it and forget it” roots. With Active Guard monitoring available with its video doorbell, it doesn’t just alert you — it steps in to deter theft. Active Guard monitoring uses AI and live agents to spot intruders, shout warnings, and call for help — all in real time. While no security system is 100% foolproof, SimpliSafe provides protection that acts before a break-in happens.

Setup is quick (under an hour) and truly DIY-friendly (but they have Expert Home Installation available if you'd rather leave it to the pros). The system’s design is sleek, the cameras are sharp, and the app is intuitive. You can start with self-monitoring for free or opt into professional monitoring whenever you need it — even just for a vacation.
