YI Technologies and its sister brand Kami Vision have been selling affordable, SD card-compatible home security cameras for years. They had a decent reputation, earned a thumbs-up from our editorial team, and even enjoyed a long-standing (but now defunct) partnership with Cove Home Security.

But things started to change a couple of years ago, and now customers describe YI as an out-right fraud.

What’s going on? Are YI and Kami scams?

We’ll take a look at the specifics in a moment, but here’s our overall take: We don’t recommend purchasing YI or Kami cameras at this time.

Why YI/Kami customers are concerned

According to posts on Reddit, Trustpilot, the Google Play store, the Apple App Store, Amazon, and the Better Business Bureau, the main issues with YI and Kami include the following:

  • Constant advertisements while using the free version of the app
  • Motion-activated video clips locked behind a paywall
  • An inability to use local storage despite a microSD slot on the camera
  • Cancellation difficulties due to disconnected phone numbers and poor email support

Let's take a closer look.

1. The ads get in the way of safety and security

YI customers report seeing advertisements at every turn, including when they open the app and again when they try to navigate to the live video feed. Because the ads are about 30 seconds long, it can take a minute or more just to open the live feed.

The ads first appeared on YI and Kami apps in 2023 but have gotten more invasive over time. Some users say the ads make the cameras virtually useless.

"I have had YI cameras for years. Recently the App has become inundated with ads to the point it's almost impossible to use. Every click to access your cameras is greeted with a 30+ second ad you must watch."

"I have 8 cameras and out of nowhere, the app now makes you watch advertisements to view the camera. By the time you watch an ad, whatever triggered the camera is gone."
Icon Quote Dark
"If there's ever an emergency and I gotta check the camera, guess what? There's an ad when you open the app, there's an ad when you click on what camera you wanna see, and of course there's a random ad that takes you out of the app itself without you even pressing anything."

"I can understand banner ads or even ads within pages maybe, but by the time I can boot up the app and actually get into a live feed, the event has already happened. And with the SD card. it has to process before you can pull it up. In an emergency situation this is FAR from ideal."

2. Motion-activated clips are hidden behind a paywall

Kami/YI cameras record a 6-second clip whenever motion is detected. Customers on the free plan report being prompted to subscribe ($5 to $15.42 per month) in order to view these clips. Some people say they already pay for a subscription and still can't view the clips.

As with the advertisements, this paywall strategy makes it virtually impossible to use the camera as intended — to assess or respond to a home security emergency.

"Awful. Advert after advert, many of them with sound which is impossible to turn off, and now no ability to view a short clip on your camera without paying. Basically it makes viewing my 9 YI cameras a painful experience, so much so that I’m considering scrapping them all."
Icon Quote Dark
"This system usability seems to have been nosediving recently. Starting with all the annoying ads on app startup to now seemingly paywalling the motion-detect recorded clips. When I try to watch a recorded clip, instead of the video very slowly loading for playback, I get a "Subscribe to Kami Cloud to unlock all detected video contents" message. I used to be able to view a 6-second clip without subscription and could subscribe for longer clips or additional detection features."

"I have the $99 subscription and now none of my video clips are available. I just paid on the 4th of July and now they want to charge me $136.00 for a year."
Icon Quote Dark
"They just started pushing a subscription to watch 6 second alerts now, which used to be free. Scrolling the timeline in an emergency, trying to locate an event is frustrating."

3. Users report blocked access to microSD card footage

For many people, YI/Kami cameras were appealing because they supported local storage instead of cloud storage. Local storage is the better option for people who have privacy concerns, poor internet connections, or low budgets.

Although the footage is written onto a microSD card, clips can be accessed remotely on the YI or Kami apps for convenience. But some customers say the apps no longer allow access to their microSD cards. Instead, they're pushed to subscribe to the cloud storage plan.

"I’m having problems with my SD cards. Saying I can’t view them now."
Icon Quote Dark
"My SD card reader stopped working when they released cloud service."
Icon Quote Dark
"There are constant adverts and screen diversions. Replaying alerts from the SD card no longer works. If a complaint is made, the response is an insulting offer of a reduced rate for cloud facilities."
Icon Quote Dark
"I store locally on a built-in SD card but Kami are always pushing me to buy a subscription. Over time Kami have made many features only available if you subscribe. Every time I open the app adverts pop up and make the app very difficult to use. I would not recommend this camera and I would avoid the company unless you’re prepared to splash out on an expensive subscription."

4. Cancelling a YI or Kami subscription can be difficult

If you're unhappy with your YI or Kami subscription, cancelling may be easier said than done.

The YI/Kami help center instructs iOS users to cancel their paid plan through Apple Subscriptions. Everyone else has to call or email the support team.

But customers say the support line is disconnected, making it impossible to cancel over the phone. Others say it takes days to hear back via email — if they hear back at all. One customer reached out to us and said they've spent a month trying to cancel their plan.

We found two customer service phone numbers for YI/Kami, called both, and confirmed that they're offline. We also emailed [email protected] but have yet to receive a reply.

"I have discontinued the subscription already twice, and received a confirmation by email. Still they charged my credit card $140 once again. When I protested, they asked if I want to cancel my subscription…"
Icon Quote Dark
"Their support refused to cancel my subscription TWICE. I submitted the initial request, they said no and offered me some kind of credit, I said no thank you just cancel, and they sent me the same message and then ended the chat."
Icon Quote Dark
"Cannot just 'cancel' by clicking a button like everyone else. No, you need to email customer support and wait 3–5 days for response. (Heads up: trial subscribers that want to cancel, don't wait til the last day ... give it almost a week)."
Icon Quote Dark
"I signed up for a 'free trial' and had to enter credit card info. I contacted Kami before the 'free' trial ended on June 19th to cancel. They responded, stating they needed more information, so I emailed them the information they requested. Then, they began responding to my emails with offers to reduce the price and/or send free cameras. This has been going on for nearly a month. Countless emails, countless attempts to call (never an agent available), countless attempts to cancel in the app (would not work)."

So, what now?

Due to the problems with usability and poor customer service, we recommend avoiding YI and Kami cameras for now

If you already own YI or Kami cameras, we're sorry to say there's no magic fix. No other app will work with the cameras, so there's no way to circumvent the ads and paywall. There's also no way to predict whether the company will roll back these changes.

The best solution seems to be to move forward with new cameras.

You can view our favorite security cameras without a subscription to see what else is out there. TP-Link and Eufy sell cameras with local storage for about the same price as YI/Kami. We've tested both brands hands-on and are happy with their performance.
