We test the best home security systems like we’re picking one for our own homes—because we are.

We’ve spent thousands of hours living with these systems, setting them up in real homes, and putting them through all kinds of real-life scenarios. So when we say SimpliSafe is our best security system for 2025, it’s not just based on hype or slick marketing—it’s because it actually works before a break-in happens. Its Active Guard monitoring can step in to help stop a crime in progress, which most systems just can’t do. And with affordable equipment and optional pro monitoring, it hits that sweet spot between protection and price.

That said, one size doesn’t fit all. SimpliSafe might not be the best choice if you’ve got a big property to cover (ADT might suit you better) or if you want cutting-edge smart home devices (hello, Vivint). And if you’re after a budget-friendly system that still makes customers happy, Cove is a sleeper hit.

We’ve tested them all—so you don’t have to. Let’s find the right fit for your home.

Compare the best home security systems

We’ve tested a lot of home security systems—lived with them, stress-tested them, and sifted through every plan and price. This table gives you a side-by-side look at how our top picks compare the things that really matter to consumers: cost, monitoring options, smart home features, and whether or not outdoor security cameras are included.

How to choose a home security system

When people ask me which home security system they should get (and they ask me a lot), the first thing I do is learn more about why they want a system and how they plan to use it. That info is crucial for finding the right fit—and it’ll help you make the smartest choice too.

Choosing an alarm system can feel like a lot—but this guide is the next-best thing to talking to one of us in real life. Whether you want something simple or smart enough to run your whole house, here’s what to keep in mind:

DIY or pro install?
DIY systems like SimpliSafe and Cove are easy to set up, cost less, and are great for smaller spaces. Go with Vivint or ADT if you want expert setup and whole-home coverage—no toolbox required.

How big is your home?
Bigger homes need more gear—think extra sensors and cameras, which can drive up costs. Smaller spaces usually do great with a starter kit.

Know what you’re really paying for.
Monthly fees matter, but so do equipment costs, contract terms, and things like cancellation or moving fees.

Focus on your must-haves.

  • Break-in protection: Alarms, cameras, and motion sensors
  • Monitoring options: Self-monitoring, pro monitoring, or both—with or without a subscription
  • Environmental alerts: Smoke, leaks, and major temp swings

Quietly powerful—and surprisingly flexible

I've tested a lot of home security systems over the years, and I'll be honest: SimpliSafe didn't always make a big impression. It's kind of like the chamomile tea of security systems—calm, unassuming, and a little too simple for my taste. But then they launched Active Guard monitoring, and I had to pay attention.

This isn't the same SimpliSafe I tested five years ago. It's grown up—and it's gone from "set it and forget it" to "set it and scare the pants off potential intruders." SafeWise contributor Alina Bradford installed the newest version in her home to see if the buzz around its Outdoor Camera with Active Guard was legit. Spoiler: it is.

Here's what stood out in Alina's tests—and what to keep in mind if you're thinking about bringing SimpliSafe home.

Setup: Easy peasy, genuinely DIY

The base station paired quickly, the sensors were stick-and-go, and I didn't need to call customer service once (a minor miracle). I had the entire system up and running in under 45 minutes—including a couple of outdoor cameras.

SimpliSafe lets you choose your equipment à la carte or as part of a package. The bundles don't offer much in the way of savings, so if you want a deal, keep your eyes peeled for seasonal sales—they sometimes cut prices by up to 50%.

Monitoring: Pro-level protection, minus the pressure

You can self-monitor for free, pay $10 a month for camera recordings, or go all-in with SimpliSafe's Pro or Pro Plus plans (think: 24/7 live agents monitoring your cameras and stepping in before a break-in happens).

We tested the $80/month Pro Plus plan, which unlocks Active Guard Outdoor Protection. The system uses AI to detect motion, then passes the baton to trained agents who can shout at intruders, trigger a siren, and call for help—sometimes all at once. It's like having a security guard watching your front yard, minus the uniform.

If that feels steep, there's a middle option: the $50/month Pro plan that only activates Active Guard at night, when about 44% of burglaries take place. According to SimpliSafe, most people choose that—and my wallet gets it. You can always upgrade to the 24/7 plan for a month if you're going out of town or want extra security for a while.

Performance: Mostly smooth with a few quirks

SimpliSafe's third-gen equipment is sleek and simple—no blinking eyesores here. The outdoor cameras are surprisingly sharp, and the two-way audio is crystal clear. But there were a couple of bumps in my testing experience. The smart lock had trouble syncing with the app on day one, and I wish the siren were a little louder (my blender makes more noise).

Still, the system did what it was supposed to do. It alerted me when it should, stayed quiet when it shouldn't, and gave me zero false alarms during my testing period. The app's timeline view is clean and easy to scan, and I appreciated the flexibility to arm and disarm from my phone, voice assistant, or keypad.

Pro tip

Because SimpliSafe lets you start and stop monitoring with no penalties, you can save with the $22 Standard or $50 Pro plan for everyday life and then upgrade to 24/7 live guard protection with Pro Plus when you go on vacation. That's just an extra $30–$58 to help you relax and maximize your downtime.

Pricing: Clear, competitive, and commitment-free

One of my favorite things about SimpliSafe is how transparent it is. There are no contracts, no penalties for canceling, and no pressure to buy more than you need. Self-monitoring starts at $0 (really), and even the top-tier plan is cheaper than many competitors.

Equipment packages start at $250 and go up to around $730, depending on how much gear you want.

Here's what SimpliSafe customers are saying

We found more than 24,000 customer reviews for SimpliSafe from third-party review sites like Trustpilot, The Better Business Bureau (BBB), and Consumer Affairs, as well as from online retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. Across these sites, SimpliSafe has an average rating of 3.6 stars out of 5, which strikes us as surprisingly low given our consistently positive hands-on experiences and the number of SafeWise readers who rely on SimpliSafe to protect their homes.

Customers often praise SimpliSafe for its easy installation and straightforward setup. Many say they had their systems up and running in no time, with minimal hassle. Customers also like SimpliSafe's budget-friendly pricing and the fact that you're not stuck in a long-term contract.

Reviews are mixed when it comes to customer service and product reliability. While some users rave about helpful reps and solid performance, others report long wait times and frustrations with cameras and sensors losing connection. The app also gets some criticism for being a bit clunky (although this seems more applicable to Android users). As of May 2025, SimpliSafe's app has 4.8 stars out of 5 in the Apple App Store and 4.5 stars on Google Play.

"I've been a SimpliSafe customer for almost a year now ... My experience has been a wonderful service that keeps my home safe, and quick customer service to solve any issues with the technology!"

—Harlan B., SimpliSafe customer review, Trustpilot, March 2025

Our verdict: SimpliSafe is worth it—even if you're not a DIYer

SimpliSafe's DIY home security systems hit that rare sweet spot: easy enough for beginners, powerful enough for pros, and flexible enough to work with your lifestyle. I love that I can turn on professional monitoring during vacations and then go back to a lower-tier plan for the rest of the year. And the fact that it may stop a break-in before it starts? That's a big deal, especially because that's the number one reason people bought a security system in 2024, according to our proprietary State of Home Security survey.

That said, if you need wall-to-wall camera coverage for a large property or want a system that integrates tightly with your smart home gear, you may want to keep shopping.

Get the rundown on all of SimpliSafe’s offerings in our full SimpliSafe review.

Is SimpliSafe the best home security system for you?

  • Best for: DIYers who want affordable, flexible home security without contracts
  • Standout feature: Active Guard monitoring with real-time agent intervention
  • Biggest trade-off: Limited smart home integrations compared to premium brands
  • Bottom line: SimpliSafe is a great pick if you want no-contract home protection that can help deter break-ins, but keep shopping if you need lots of cameras for a large property and have a tight budget

Luxury-level protection with brains to match

When it comes to home security, the more proactive, the better. I want smart tech that doesn’t just sit there—it needs to do something. That’s what drew me to Vivint: it promises a system that’s not only smart enough to guard your home but smart enough to think for itself.

And honestly? Vivint delivers. Big time.

In April, our eminent tester Alina had Vivint’s full catalog installed—cameras, sensors, the works—to see if it still lives up to its reputation as the smartest security system on the block. It’s not cheap, and it’s not for commitment-phobes (hi, five-year contract*), but if you want the extra reassurance that comes from serious protection plus serious convenience, Vivint’s hard to beat.

*If you don't want a contract, you can pay for your Vivint equipment outright.

Tester's take: My favorite Vivint features
"My favorite part about the Vivint system in my house is the hidden sensors. They're installed inside your door so that they don't even show when the door is closed."
Alina Bradford is a safety expert with over 25 years of experience.
—Alina Bradford, SafeWise contributor and tester

Installation: White-glove service (for real)

We're no strangers to DIY installs, but sometimes it’s nice to let the pros handle it—and Vivint makes that part seamless. For $49 (the cheapest pro install fee we’ve seen), a technician showed up, sized up Alina's home, and set up the system in a few hours. No manuals, no call-in for troubleshooting, no panic-drilling into drywall (they did the drilling for us).

The bonus? Vivint’s techs help customize your setup on the fly. Want an extra sensor on that side window you forgot about? Done.

The installer will also run through the whole system and the app so that you know exactly how to use your system before they leave.

Monitoring: Smarts and muscle in one app

Vivint monitoring kicks in immediately once the system is live. The monitoring plan starts at $39.99. If you want 24/7 recording, you can add the Vivint Playback DVR for $6.99 per month.

While Vivint monitoring is more expensive, it's worth it. Thanks to Smart Deter features, Vivint cameras don’t just record—they act. Over the years, we've watched more than one porch pirate freeze and backpedal after the outdoor camera’s AI-powered whistle and flashing lights kicked in.

Performance: Smooth operator (but pricey)

Vivint’s Smart Hub is the brains of the system, and it’s a noticeable upgrade from most DIY security panels thanks to its sleek touchscreen. It can manage up to six cameras without crashing the Wi-Fi (a modern marvel) and easily controls everything from lights to locks to garage doors.

The cameras themselves are standouts—especially the Video Doorbell Pro and Outdoor Camera Pro: crystal-clear video, smart motion detection, and real-time alerts that actually make sense (not just "leaf blowing across your driveway" false alarms).

The biggest downside? Cost. Vivint’s proprietary equipment doesn’t come cheap. A basic starter setup runs about $600—double what you’ll pay for some DIY kits. But you're not getting white-label gadgets; you’re getting security gear built from scratch with safety in mind.

Light Bulb
Pro tip

Did you know a home security system can actually make you money? Most homeowners insurance companies will give you a break on your policy with proof of a professionally monitored system. Even better, Vivint's research found that homes with even one security feature sell for more (up to $38 more per square foot!).

Pricing: Worth it for what you get

Here’s the quick math:

  • Monitoring: Starting at $39.99/mo
  • Vivint Playback DVR: $6.99/mo or $299.99 as a one-time fee

Here's what Vivint customers are saying

We found over 83,000 customer reviews for Vivint from third-party review sites like BBB, Trustpilot, and Consumer Affairs. Across those sites, Vivint has an average 3.12-star rating out of 5. That's impressive, especially for a company that's come under tight scrutiny (and run into some legal trouble) over the years.

Vivint gets high marks for its professional installation process and sleek, all-in-one smart home features. Many customers praise the knowledgeable technicians and seamless integration of cameras, thermostats, and security devices in a single app. As of May 2025, Vivint's app has 4.6 stars (out of 5) on the Apple App Store and 3.6 on Google Play.

Reviews over the long term are more mixed. One theme we saw is frustration with customer service—especially around billing issues, contract cancellations, and inconsistent follow-up. Some users also report technical glitches, like cameras going offline or motion detection lagging, which can undermine confidence in the system.

“Vivint have been great in communicating with us through installation and even after. They offer support with your system and answer questions in a timely manner. It really feels like you're a part of a team when working with them and not just treated as a service.!”

—Leon, Vivint customer review, Trustpilot, May 2025

Our verdict: Vivint's smart, sleek, and serious—if you're ready for a commitment

If you want best-in-class security, automation that actually works, and zero setup stress, Vivint is a dream. Yes, it costs more upfront (and yes, that contract can feel daunting), but the payoff is huge: proactive outdoor cameras, fewer false alarms, and a home that basically looks after itself.

Is Vivint's full-service, monitored system right for you?

  • Best for: Homeowners who want smart, high-end security without DIY headaches
  • Standout feature: Smart Deter tech scares off lurkers before they can steal
  • Biggest trade-off: Higher equipment cost + long contracts if you finance
  • Bottom line: Vivint is ideal if you want professional installation, smart home security, and expert guidance, but keep looking if you prefer to test a system first or want to skip a long-term contract

150 years in the game, and ADT still knows how to level up

If you told me 10 years ago that ADT would partner with Google Nest and launch facial recognition tech that lets your dog walker in without you lifting a finger, I wouldn’t have believed you. But here we are.

ADT may be one of the oldest names in home security, but don’t mistake that for outdated. Sure, it still requires a contract (not our favorite), and yeah, there’s an installation fee—but the system itself? Smart, solid, and constantly evolving.

I recently got a closer look at ADT’s Trusted Neighbor feature, and I’ll just say this: we’re no longer living in the era of spare keys under flower pots.

Installation and setup: Leave it to the pros

ADT systems come with professional installation, and just like with Vivint, it’s kind of nice to let someone else do the heavy lifting for once. The $99 install fee isn’t nothing, but it includes an in-home risk assessment where the technician helps identify security gaps. I’ve shadowed ADT techs during this process before, and they take it seriously—it’s not just a glorified sales pitch.

You don’t get to pack up your equipment and take it with you if you move, so ADT isn’t ideal for renters. That said, they do work with homeowners who need to relocate mid-contract.

Editor's take: ADT still knows what it’s doing
"I’ve watched ADT evolve from clunky legacy tech to sleek, smart integrations. The in-home risk assessment alone is worth something—it’s like having a personal security consultant walk through your space and flag every potential vulnerability. You might not love the contract, but the level of customization and insight makes it a fair trade."

Equipment: Familiar name, more innovative tech

ADT’s standard package includes the basics: a touchscreen panel, motion detector, contact sensors, and the iconic ADT yard sign (honestly, a burglar deterrent in its own right). But the real glow-up came when ADT started working with Google Nest.

The Nest Doorbell and indoor/outdoor cameras are leaps ahead of the old ADT cameras, and it’s great to see them paired with ADT’s robust system. You also get access to a suite of extras: smoke detectors, CO sensors, smart thermostats, garage control—the whole smart home lineup.

Pro tip

Ever seen the "Ghost of ADT Past" in someone's house? Because ADT equipment is professionally installed, devices are often wired. Unlike DIY systems, you don't take the equipment with you when you move. However, ADT works with customers who need to move during the contract term. Even so, we don't recommend a pro-installed ADT system for renters. But don't despair! If you have your heart set on ADT, you can check out its DIY offering, ADT Self Setup.

Monitoring and features: Solid coverage with a smart side

ADT owns six 24/7 monitoring centers. That’s more than any other provider and means if one center goes down (weather, power, zombies—whatever), your coverage keeps rolling. This is the stuff most security companies don’t talk about, but it matters.

Monitoring plans range from basic to whole smart home and video. That facial recognition feature I mentioned earlier? It works with smart locks so familiar faces can be let in automatically—no keys, no keypad codes. That alone may justify the higher monthly price, especially if your front door gets as much action as Grand Central Station.

And yes, there’s a contract—usually three years. If you want flexibility, look elsewhere. But if you want consistency and nationwide support, ADT delivers.

Pricing: Equipment included, contracts required

ADT has a bit of a reputation for being pricier, especially compared to DIY security systems. Monthly fees range from $28.99 (for a landline system) to $64.99 or more (depending on your equipment). There's no question—you’ll probably pay more monthly than you would for a self-installed setup. But there are some upsides baked into the model.

For one, you don’t have to fork over a pile of cash to get started. Instead, ADT includes equipment costs in your monthly payment, which helps spread out the expenses and makes budgeting easier.

You will need to pay for professional installation, but considering you get an expert walk-through of your home’s vulnerabilities during setup, it’s not a bad deal.

Image alert from Nest Cam with ADT security system.

Katie McEntire testing Nest Cam with an ADT security system.

I recommend the $65/month Video and Control package, which gives you wireless equipment, Google Nest cameras, and automation features. That price may seem steep, but it works out to around $775 per year. Over a three-year contract, you'll pay about $2,300. Considering that the average loss from a nighttime break-in is around $4,500, ADT's protection can be well worth the investment.

Here's what ADT customers are saying

We found over 26,000 customer reviews for ADT from third-party review sites like BBB, Trustpilot, and Consumer Affairs. Across these sites, ADT has an average rating of 2.04 out of 5 stars, which is no surprise. ADT's more traditional business model with contracts and cancellation penalties can upset customers who don't understand what they're signing up for (we urge you to read the fine print!).

Many long-time customers appreciate ADT's reliable monitoring and professional installation. Reviewers often highlight positive experiences with knowledgeable technicians and responsive support when things are working smoothly. Some customers also credit ADT with stopping break-ins or providing "peace of mind" during emergencies.

However, frustrations around billing, contracts, and customer service are common themes. Many reviewers report long hold times, difficulty canceling service, or unexpected fees—especially when making account changes or ending a contract early. Some users also mention that equipment troubleshooting can be tricky, requiring multiple service calls.

“I feel at ease knowing I'm protected each night when setting the alarm before bed, especially given today's troubling times. The quality of security ADT provides truly surpasses expectations ... Although I've always had dogs for security, transitioning to ADT has let me feel secure without worrying about caring for a pet into our later years. Their service could not have been a more convenient and impactful decision.”

—David, ADT customer review, Consumer Affairs, April 2025

Our verdict: ADT is reliable, recognizable, and smarter than ever

ADT’s not the cheapest, and it’s not the most flexible—but it’s reliable. And now, it’s smart too. Google Nest cameras, facial recognition, and automation tools bring the old-school powerhouse into the modern age.

Learn more about what ADT has to offer in our full ADT review.

Is ADT the right home security system for you?

  • Best for: Homeowners who want professionally installed protection from a legacy brand
  • Standout feature: Trusted Neighbor facial recognition + Google Nest camera integration
  • Biggest trade-off: Contract required and limited portability
  • Bottom line: ADT is a great choice if you want the most trusted name in home security with advanced Google Nest features, but keep looking if you’re a renter or not ready to commit to a long-term contract.

The DIY system built with real people in mind

I remember the first time I stumbled across Cove, tucked into the startup section at CES. They were the new kids on the block, but you could tell they had something special even then. Fast forward a few years (and several system upgrades later), and Cove has carved out a legit spot among the top DIY security brands.

I've tested every version of Cove's system so far, and the one thing that's remained constant? They actually listen. Customer feedback isn't just a checkbox for them—it's part of how they build and improve. Honestly, it shows.

Customer-first attitude: Cove's secret sauce

If you value good customer service, you might as well stop shopping now and head straight to Cove. Their policy is to be "more than fair" with customers—and that's not just marketing fluff. From flexible cancellation to equipment rewards, Cove treats you like a person, not just a number.
It's no wonder they've got a 98% customer retention rate.* (Yes, you read that right.)

And unlike some security companies that stick you with ugly fees, Cove lets you cancel any time without punishing penalties—the only thing you may have to do is pay off your equipment if you financed it.

Tester's take: Very responsive sensors and alerts
"After using Cove for around a month in my home, here's my take: The new version of Cove is easy to install and fully customizable. [When there was water leaking from the washing machine,] I got a text, I got a call, and the alarm itself sounded. Cove really wants to make sure you get the alert when something goes wrong, even if it's a leak in the basement . . . I loved seeing how fast Cove responded to its sensors detecting trouble.”
Katie McEntire, SafeWise security tester

Installation: DIY with a helping hand

Cove's setup experience is one of the best I've tested. Thanks to a 7-inch touchscreen panel that walks you through every step, it feels more like having a tech-savvy friend helping you out than wrestling with tiny instruction manuals.

Cove calls it "done-with-me installation," and honestly, it's a game-changer if you're tired of flipping between apps and paper booklets.

Monitoring: Affordable, easy, and packed with perks

Cove keeps it simple with two plans: Cove Basic and Cove Plus. Both are super affordable (starting under $20/month) and include some thoughtful features, like InstaText (confirm alarms by text) and LiveAssist (talk to help right through your control panel).

And Cove treats you right. It's rare to see a security company that rewards you for sticking around, but Cove manages to do it without feeling gimmicky.

If you bump up to Cove Plus for $29.99/month, you also get:

  • Smart home integrations with Alexa and Google
  • Video recording
  • A lifetime equipment warranty
  • $5/month equipment credit to spend on upgrades (no one else does this!)

Equipment: Focused on security, not flashy smart home tricks

Cove's equipment lineup is straightforward and sturdy. It doesn't try to be a smart home platform—it sticks to what it does best: protecting your house.

You can add up to four touchscreens around your home, which is so handy if you have multiple levels. And I can't skip mentioning the flood sensor. Even the Cove team calls it their favorite device—and for good reason. Water damage is way more common (and expensive) than break-ins.

If you want full-blown smart home bells and whistles (like IFTTT routines or Z-Wave gadgets), Cove might feel a little basic. But for home protection? It's all you need.

Pricing: Wallet-friendly from start to finish

Cove offers clear, simple pricing:

  • Cove Basic: $19.99/mo.
  • Cove Plus: $29.99/mo.

Equipment is à la carte, starting at around $300 for a basic setup (hub + touchscreen + sensor). You can install it yourself, or pay for pro installation starting at $129 if you want extra help.

Overall, Cove is one of the most budget-friendly ways to get real protection—especially considering the lifetime equipment warranty you can unlock with Cove Plus.

Here's what Cove customers are saying

We found over 6,300 reviews of Cove on third-party sites like Consumer Affairs, Trustpilot, and the BBB. Across those sites, Cove has an average of 3.2 stars out of 5, which is actually pretty good for a home security company.

Customers often highlight Cove as a great budget-friendly alternative to bigger names like ADT. Cove earns high marks for its simple DIY setup, affordable pricing, and responsive customer service. Many users appreciate how easy it is to customize their system, order additional equipment, and manage everything through a user-friendly app. As of May 2025, Cove's app is rated 1.6 stars out of five in the Apple App Store and has 3.1 stars on Google Play—one of the only security system apps to do better on Android than iOS.

That said, reviews also reveal some recurring challenges. Technical issues with cameras, hubs, and app connectivity are common frustrations, and several reviewers mention long wait times or inconsistent support when troubleshooting problems. Canceling service can also be a hassle, with reports of multiple calls and delays.

"Representative helped during a tense and scary time and was able to assist me promptly in all of my needs without difficulty.”

Best for smart home fans who want flexibility

Abode is always the wild card in our home security tests—and we mean that in a good way. It was the first security system to support Apple HomeKit, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Alexa, and Google Assistant, which still sets it apart from most DIY systems today.

What's really cool? You don't have to pay for a subscription to get that kind of smart home compatibility. Abode gives you a lot of flexibility, whether you want to self-monitor for free or pay for pro monitoring—and you can even grab short-term monitoring if you're heading out of town.

Setup: Mix and match hubs + easy DIY install

Abode gives you three hubs to choose from:

  • Security Hub: Basic, with a built-in siren (no Apple HomeKit support).
  • Smart Hub: More advanced, works with Alexa, Google, and HomeKit.
  • Iota: An all-in-one hub with a built-in camera, motion sensor, siren, and two-way audio.

Our safety tech expert and tester, Katie McEntire, tested the Iota in a two-bedroom apartment. Here's what she found.

"The Abode Iota covered all the entry points in my apartment without needing extra sensors (though you'll want to add some for bigger spaces). Setup is typical DIY—connect to Wi-Fi, pair sensors, and stick them in place. I had a few hiccups with the app freezing during setup, but everything still paired successfully in the end."

Katie's pro tip: If you've got pets, lower your motion sensitivity—my cat Toki kept tripping the alarm.

Abode's security kit, smart security kit, iota, and multiple sensors piled up in my apartment after getting them from Abode to test.

Bell
New Abode testing is underway!

Abode recently sent us every piece of equipment for all systems they offer, and we're getting those set up for short- and long-term testing (as of May 2025). We'll share updates on each system and how well the new and improved app performs.

Monitoring: Flexibility is Abode's strength

Abode is one of the only brands that lets you self-monitor for free and offers short-term pro monitoring (like 3- or 7-day bundles). That's perfect if you want a little extra security backup for a weekend away. If you want more than just the basics, here's the breakdown:

  • Basic: Free, Live video view + app arm/disarm
  • Standard: $6.99, 10 days video storage, home automation, cellular backup
  • Pro: $25.99, Everything in Standard + 24/7 pro monitoring, AI alerts

The Standard plan is solid if you're self-monitoring but still want smart home routines and video storage. The Abode Pro plan gives you full professional monitoring at a competitive price—and you can cancel anytime.

Thumbs Up
Abode on-demand monitoring

Abode is the only security company that lets you add pro monitoring for as few as three or seven days—perfect if you're going out of town for a long weekend or quick trip. It's $8 for three days and $15 for seven. You can add on-demand monitoring right in the Abode app.

Equipment: Built for smart homes

Abode's gear is designed to work with a ton of other smart devices (over 160 brands), which is a big win if you already have—or plan to build—a smart home setup.
Highlights include:

  • Base kits starting around $160
  • Door/window sensors ($30)
  • Motion detectors ($50)
  • Smoke/CO sensors ($80)
  • Cameras (Abode + Eufy options)

The Iota hub adds bonus points for renters or small spaces because it packs a camera, siren, and motion sensor into one sleek unit.

One heads-up: Abode's equipment is a bit pricier than SimpliSafe or Cove, but lower monthly fees help balance it out.

Here's what Abode customers are saying

Abode has fewer customer reviews online (overall and recently) than the other security companies on this roundup. We found just over 3,200 reviews on third-party sites like the BBB, Trustpilot, and Amazon. Across those websites, Abode has an average rating of 2.88 stars out of five. That's on the low end, but it also represents a much smaller group of customers.

Positive reviews center on how easy it is to get Abode up and running, with special shoutouts for the seamless smart home integration and voice control.

Negative reviews tend to mention glitchy equipment and connections, and difficulty getting replacements or refunds for faulty devices (although they note that customer service reps are friendly, just slow to deliver a resolution). The mobile app continues to be hit-and-miss, with current ratings of 4.2 stars (out of five) in the Apple App Store and 2.4 on Google Play.

"I couldn’t have asked for anyone more patient and helpful than the person that supported me and waited online to make sure that everything worked. I was even able to send through pictures of my door frame for advice on how best to position my door motion sensor ... Best of all I was able to get this up and running without having to ask my adult children for help."

—Akosua, Abode customer review, Trustpilot, May 2024

Our verdict: Abode's best for smart home fans who want options

Abode is one of our top picks for anyone who wants smart home automation without a contract. We love that it works with Apple HomeKit (rare!) and that you can choose pro monitoring only when you need it.

DIY setup, full-service vibes

There’s DIY home security—and then there’s Frontpoint.

When I first set up a Frontpoint system, I realized it had something most DIY options don’t: the depth and polish you usually only find with companies like Vivint or ADT. It’s packed with professional-grade features, serious equipment variety, and—best of all—you can still install it yourself without breaking a sweat.

Systems like SimpliSafe and Cove are great for the essentials, but if you want more choices (think garage sensors, outdoor cameras, smart plugs), Frontpoint's where it’s at.

Setup: DIY, but with pro-level guidance

Setting up Frontpoint was smoother than most systems I’ve tested. The app walks you through each step, complete with big, easy-to-follow prompts. I didn't have to second-guess where anything went or how to connect it.

No installers needed, no pressure, and no sales pitches—just an app-guided setup that gets you from box to protected in less than an hour. But if you're not in the DIY mood, you can opt for pro installation starting at $129. (Although I think it's a waste because this system really is so easy to set up.)

Tester's take: Frontpoint grows with you
"Frontpoint offers lots of options if you have specific security needs. Plus it's easy to install and expand as those needs change. The whole system is really easy to control and keep an eye on. Overall, I would say Frontpoint is good for anyone who wants a DIY system that doesn't feel DIY."
Katie McEntire, SafeWise security tester

Testing Frontpoint's system. Frontpoint hub.

Monitoring: Always on, always ready

Frontpoint doesn’t mess around with half-measures. Their professional monitoring covers everything from break-ins to fires to medical emergencies, and every plan includes Crash & Smash protection. That means even if someone tries to rip your control panel off the wall, Frontpoint’s monitoring center still gets the alert.

There’s no option for self-monitoring here—you’re signing up for pro protection from day one. But considering the equipment you’re getting access to (and our strong recommendation for pro monitoring), it’s a fair trade.

Equipment: More options, more protection

One thing I appreciate about Frontpoint is the sheer amount of gear you can choose from. It feels a lot closer to Vivint than SimpliSafe when it comes to options.

Want indoor, outdoor, and doorbell cameras? Done.
Smart plugs for outdoor lights? Yep.
Sensors for your garage door? Covered.

You can start with a package or build your own system piece by piece. And while Frontpoint used to rely on third-party gear, they’ve been expanding their own line of proprietary equipment based on real customer feedback—which is a huge plus in my book.

The only real gap? It’s a bit more expensive than basic DIY kits. But you’re getting much more for the price.

Pricing: No hidden gotchas

Frontpoint’s pricing is refreshingly simple: pay for your equipment upfront (usually around $300–$600 for a good setup) and then a flat monthly fee for professional monitoring.

Shows video footage from Frontpoint security cameras: an indoor camera with night vision activated, and an outdoor camera overlooking a backyard on a sunny day.

Image credit: SafeWise, Frontpoint outdoor camera footage.

Plans typically run around $49.99–$59.99/month, depending on what features you include (like video surveillance). That’s a little higher than SimpliSafe or Cove, but lower than many professionally installed systems like ADT.

You also get a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if it’s not the right fit, you’re not locked in long-term.

Here's what Frontpoint customers are saying

We found nearly 21,000 customer reviews for Frontpoint on third-party sites like Trustpilot, Consumer Affairs, and the BBB. Across those three websites, Frontpoint earns an average rating of 2.66 stars out of five.

Frontpoint gets a lot of love from longtime customers who appreciate its easy DIY setup, reliable equipment, and personable customer service. Reviewers often highlight how simple it is to expand their system with cameras, locks, and other devices over time, and many praise Frontpoint’s knowledgeable reps for walking them through issues step by step. Users also like the app, which is currently rated 4.3 stars out of five in the Apple App Store and has 3.7 stars on Google Play.

But not all experiences are smooth. Some customers report frustration with billing, contract renewals, and the cancellation process. A few mention false alarms or camera issues, while others feel the service hasn’t kept pace with expectations—especially at its comparatively higher price point.

"I have been a customer for over ten years and own most of the equipment [Frontpoint] sells, including cameras. Everything has always worked great and customer service has been good. They have grown a lot and things aren’t as personal as in the old days, but everything is still good."

—Tom, Frontpoint customer review, Trustpilot, April 2025

Our verdict: Frontpoint offers big-league security without a big production

If you want more equipment options, smarter tech, and a super-easy DIY install, Frontpoint delivers. It’s flexible enough for small apartments or big houses—and it grows with you if your needs change.

Learn about Frontpoint's plans, packages, and equipment in our review. Also, find out how simple it is to install with our installation guide.

Does Frontpoint have what you're looking for in a security system?

  • Best for: DIYers and renters who want full-service-level equipment and monitoring
  • Standout feature: Huge variety of sensors, cameras, and smart home gear
  • Biggest trade-off: Pricier than some other DIY kits, and there's no self-monitoring option
  • Bottom line: If you want a security system that’s packed with features, easy to install, and backed by professional monitoring, Frontpoint makes DIY feel anything but basic.

Camera-first security that's finally getting smarter

If you're building your home security system around cameras, it's hard to beat Ring.

In January 2025, I got an early demo of Ring's new Smart Video Search (currently still in beta for U.S. customers) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Honestly, I was impressed. It's fast, intuitive, and ridiculously easy to find exactly the footage you need—whether it's a package theft or your kid's post-school dance party on the porch.

And while I've been singing SimpliSafe's praises lately for proactive camera monitoring, credit where it's due: Ring actually did it first with Virtual Security Guard. Trained pros can watch your cameras and step in when needed—like shooing away a shady lurker before they cause trouble.

That said, not every recent change has been my favorite (looking at you, confusing new monitoring plan structure). But overall, Ring Alarm still offers a lot of value—especially for camera lovers.

Setup and equipment: The basics, plus cameras galore

Ring Alarm hits all the DIY essentials: a base station, keypad, motion sensor, and entry sensors. It's easy to set up (no tools, no installers needed), and getting started with a kit can cost as little as $200.

But cameras are where Ring really shines. With seven different models—spotlight cams, floodlight cams, and the iconic video doorbells—you can cover every inch of your property, inside and out.

One gripe I've had with Ring was a lack of backward compatibility whenever new devices dropped. Good news: when I pressed Ring about this at CES, they assured me that newer features and devices won't leave existing customers behind anymore.

Editor's take: Ring's camera focus makes it a standout
"It's no surprise that the company that invented the video doorbell dominates when it comes to cameras. Whether you're looking to catch porch pirates, track motion across your yard, or spy on your new puppy, Ring's video tech is second to none in the DIY world. And with Smart Video Search making it faster to find key moments, Ring's starting to feel really polished."

Monitoring: Affordable—but watch the fine print

Ring used to have one of the simplest (and cheapest) monitoring setups. Now? It's a little trickier.

Here's the gist:

  • Ring's Basic plan ($4.99/mo.) covers one camera.
  • Standard ($9.99/mo.) covers all devices at one location.
  • Premium ($19.99/mo.) adds 24/7 recording, Smart Video Search, and 24/7 backup internet.

BUT professional monitoring is now an add-on—$10/month extra.

If you want trained pros watching your system around the clock, your actual price ends up being $19.99–$29.99/month, depending on your base plan.

A Ring security camera on a table next to its packaging and accessories, ready for installation.

Virtual Security Guard (proactive camera monitoring) is a separate $99/month add-on—steep, but still cheaper than similar services like those from Deep Sentinel.

The good news? No contracts. If you don't love what you picked, you can change plans anytime without penalties.

Here's what Ring Alarm customers are saying

Finding customer reviews for Ring Alarm is challenging because most sites like BBB and Trustpilot only have profiles for Ring as a whole company. However, because all of Ring's products are in the security realm, we still looked at them. For targeted Ring Alarm reviews, we went to Amazon. Overall, we looked at over 8,600 reviews, including 5,170 for Ring Alarm specifically. The average rating comes out to 2.35 stars out of five.

On the plus side, customers like how easy it is to set up the system, the functionality of the app, and the value for the money. Several reviewers said putting Ring Alarm in place made them feel safer.

Negative reviews overwhelmingly express frustration with customer service and the need for a subscription to access useful features. Complaints about subscriptions seemed to increase after Ring changed its plans last year, which made self-monitoring much more difficult if you choose not to pay a monthly fee.

"I recently upgraded to the Ring Alarm 5-Piece Kit and am thrilled with my decision! The setup was incredibly simple, even for someone with limited tech skills ... The 30-day free Ring Protect trial is an excellent bonus, offering peace of mind with professional monitoring. I highly recommend this kit to anyone looking to improve their home security system with ease!"

—DariosaurusRex, Ring Alarm customer review, Amazon, January 2025

Our verdict: Ring is the best DIY system if cameras are your priority

Ring Alarm keeps things simple, affordable, and very camera-focused. If you care more about video surveillance and don't mind fewer smart home integrations, it's a fantastic choice.

Read all about Ring alarm equipment and prices in our full Ring Alarm review.

Is Ring Alarm the best home security option for you?

  • Best for: DIYers who want camera-heavy security and easy video search features
  • Standout feature: Smart Video Search + proactive Virtual Security Guard option
  • Biggest trade-off: Monitoring structure is more confusing than before
  • Bottom line: If top-tier cameras, smarter footage access, and flexible DIY security are your jam, Ring Alarm is still one of the best budget-friendly ways to protect your home.

The State of Home Security 2025 Report

To get a clear picture of home security trends across the U.S., we partnered with Pollfish to survey 2,500 people in all 50 states (with at least 50 respondents per state). We asked about everything from why people invest in security systems and how much they spend to which features and brands they trust most.

The insights we gathered helped shape our 2025 Best Home Security Systems roundup, ensuring our recommendations reflect what real users value—whether it’s affordability, reliability, or cutting-edge protection.

Here’s a snapshot of what we learned.

Bar chart showing why people added or upgraded home security in 2024-2025. Preventing a future break-in is the number one reason.
Bar chart showing how people found their home security system. Recommendations from friends and family are the top way.
  • Why people invest in home security:  Nearly three in ten respondents say preventing future break-ins is their top motivator, followed by concerns about crime (18%) and encouragement from family or friends (14%).
  • Purchasing trends: When it comes to picking a system to protect their home, the biggest influence is a recommendation from friends and family (35%), followed by online research (24%).
  • What people are spending: About 56% of buyers spend $500 or less on their system, and 42% pay under $50 per month for monitoring.
  • Who's buying: Most home security owners (78%) are homeowners, and about nine in ten live in a single-family house rather than an apartment or condo.
  • DIY vs. pro: Installation is split evenly between DIY and professional setups. However, self-monitoring has a slight edge (55% vs. 45%), signaling that many buyers skip a subscription and watch over their homes without professional help.
  • Favorite brands: Ring and ADT continue to lead the market, used by 27% and 22% of respondents, respectively, with SimpliSafe and Brinks also making strong showings.
  • Top tech in demand: Outdoor cameras dominate as the most valued piece of equipment (32%), and they’re also the most included device in home systems (64%). Motion sensors (56%) and door sensors (56%) round out the top three essentials.
  • Contracts: One-year contracts remain the most common (34%), but short-term commitments (under a year) are gaining traction (28%).
  • Customers are happy: Around 70% of users are satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of their equipment, installation process, and customer service—showing that today’s systems are meeting expectations.

Home security system FAQ

Is a home security system worth it in 2025?

Yes, a home security system is worth it to help deter break-ins, get help faster, and capture evidence. You see the true value of your investment over time. It would take close to 10 years of paying for a monitored home security system to match the cost of being burgled just one time. In 2023, the average loss from a burglary is around $4,000.2

With the average annual cost of a monitored home security system coming in around $400 after equipment, it’s a preventative measure that’s worth it. Plus, you can get discounts on home owners insurance, and most burglars say they’d skip a house that has a security system.

Do I have to sign a contract for a home security system?

Maybe—most traditional monitored security systems, like ADT, require a contract. However, most DIY systems let you pay for monitoring on a monthly basis, with no contract.

If your system requires a contract, contract length can range from three to five years. But there are more home security options than ever before that offer shorter contracts and month-to-month (contract-free) terms—especially if you can pay for equipment up front.

The best security systems to fit your lifestyle

How we review the best home security systems

Before we dive into how we test and review home security systems, let's talk about why they matter in the first place. A break-in, burglary, or home invasion is an awful experience. Your home is meant to be your sanctuary, and when someone—usually a stranger—violates your peace and privacy, it can leave you feeling anxious and angry. Some people also notice an uptick in sleep deprivation, panic attacks, illness, and poor confidence after a burglary.

This vulnerability isn’t a new phenomenon. A research article published in 1980 concluded that people feel a “sense of insecurity caused by the knowledge that threatening strangers have entered one’s home, a place considered to be one’s private territory under personal control” after experiencing a burglary. A more recent study found that 10% of people couldn’t bear to be home alone after a break-in.

No one wants to feel this way, so it’s no surprise that our 2025 survey found that 72% of people who buy home security systems have never experienced a burglary firsthand. Instead, they’re proactively protecting themselves from the shock and cost of a break-in.

Prevention is a smart approach—the mere sight of security equipment may be enough to deter some burglars, while blaring alarms may cause them to rush and take fewer items. Even the clever use of smart gadgets can make burglars think twice about entering your home just in case you’re around.

But not all home security systems are created equal. We know from more than a decade of hands-on experience and research that connection failures, battery problems, grainy video footage, notification delays, quiet alarms, narrow fields of view, inadequate coverage, and improper installation can seriously compromise a home security system.

If a burglar thinks the reward (your stuff!) is worth the risk of getting caught, they might poke around and look for vulnerabilities in your system. And if they know you chose a sub-par security brand, good luck.

That’s why we take our home security reviews seriously. Here’s how we do it.

How common are home burglaries?

According to FBI data, nearly half a million homes were burgled in the US in 2023 (the most recent reporting year). By our calculations, that means around 38 of every 10,000 Americans will experience a burglary each year, and about 1.6 burglaries happen every minute.

However, the true burglary rate is likely higher than that because these crimes are significantly underreported. For instance, the Pew Research Center estimates that only about 45% of residential burglaries are reported to police. On top of that, only about 94% of local crime data is reported to the FBI. Crime rates can also vary significantly from state to state and city to city, as we’ve continuously explored in our annual Safest Cities reports.

But remember, a home security system can protect you from more than just a burglary. Many can also monitor for fire, carbon monoxide, and water leaks, and some include panic buttons that can be pressed any time you feel unsafe.

Our experience at a glance

We’ve been reviewing home security systems for 12 years. During that time, we’ve:

  • Put in over 4,000 hours of hands-on testing
  • Installed and tested 21 home security systems in 23 homes
  • Surveyed over 30,000 people about their crime experiences, perceptions, and preventions
  • Surveyed 2,500 home security buyers
  • Analyzed more than a decade of national and statewide crime data
  • Met with dozens of industry leaders
  • Interviewed criminologists, police officers, dispatchers, and first responders
  • Read hundreds of real customer reviews
  • Toured one professional monitoring center

Our home security testing process

Our testers use their home security systems for 30–180 days and take notes every step of the way.

Shopping experience: Does the company pressure us to buy an upgraded package? Are we given false information during the sales pitch? Can we easily customize how much and what kind of equipment we buy? Are we given any guidance about how to fully protect our home?

Installation: If it’s done by professionals, did they arrive on time? Clean up after themselves? Fully explain the system’s features? If it’s a DIY installation, were the instructions easy to understand? How long did it take? Was it easy to contact customer service for troubleshooting?

Reliability: Does the equipment work as it should? How quickly does the monitoring center react when an alarm is triggered? Does the mobile app crash? Is the video footage clear? Does the alarm seem loud enough to draw attention? Does the equipment seem durable and well-made? Does it really connect to cellular data when Wi-Fi isn’t available?

Compatibility: If the equipment integrates with a smart home assistant like Amazon Alexa, is it easy to connect? Do the extra functions add significant value to the system? Do you have to control some of your smart home equipment through a separate app?

Mobile app: Is it easy to find what you need on the smartphone app? Does it load quickly? Do you have to leave it running in the background to get alerts? Does the camera footage and audio come through clearly? Does using the app drain the phone’s battery?

Alerts and notifications: When an alarm is activated, how long does it take to get an alert on your phone? Can you also get a text or phone call? Is the phone call automated, or is a real person on the line? How many other people can receive alerts? Can you adjust the alert sensitivity of the camera? Can you set up custom PINs to disarm the system so you know who has entered your home?

Other factors we consider

In addition to our hands-on testing, we gather data about each brand, find industry averages, and look for unique offerings. Here’s what we take into consideration when making our recommendations.

Cost

People are willing to skimp on many things, but not home security. When we surveyed 2,500 home security users in 2025, 84.8% said they spent up to $1,000 on their equipment and installation. The most popular price range was $251–$500. In terms of monthly fees, $26–$50 was most common, but 82.3% of respondents paid up to $75 per month. We use this proprietary information to recommend systems that fit people’s budgets.

Over the past decade, we’ve amassed a large amount of cost data for dozens of brands. We know exactly which companies sell the most affordable motion detectors and which ones over charge for entry sensors. We know which companies raise their monitoring prices each year and which ones offer more stability to their customers. This helps us pinpoint exactly which brands to recommend to budget-conscious buyers.

We also use this data to calculate industry averages for equipment, monitoring, and installation. We prefer companies that land in the sweet spot—not too cheap and not too expensive. And if we think a company is overcharging consumers based on what they offer, you can bet we don’t recommend them.

Contracts

We go through a mystery shopping process and talk to each brand’s customer service department to uncover hidden fees, contract requirements, and cancellation policies that may be difficult to understand or to find on a company's website. We look at the fine print so you know what to expect.

Our survey shows most people (62.24%) have security contracts that last one year or less, so we prioritize security companies that offer flexible, month-to-month contracts and annual contracts.

Advanced security features

We’re always looking for home security innovations. In recent years, we’ve seen the launch of Rapid SOS, porch pirate deterrents, live guard monitoring, and advanced AI alerts. All of these are designed to help people get help faster and to make sure first responders are prepared for what’s ahead.

That said, we aim to cut through the marketing fluff and find out if these features are actually worth it. We test everything that doesn’t require an actual call to emergency services (that can get you in big trouble!). For example, we trigger alarms but cancel them before first responders are dispatched. When we can’t test something first-hand, we gauge response times and reliability by reading customer reviews.

Smart home integration

According to our survey, most people (58.6%) don’t buy add-ons like smart home equipment, medical alert buttons, or identity theft protection. They’re mainly focused on security, so they stick to the essentials.

However, smart home products are the most popular add-ons (especially smart locks), and Amazon Alexa is the most popular smart assistant. So although we don’t ding a brand for not offering smart home integrations, we’re sure to point it out for those who are interested. And we test all integrations to make sure things work seamlessly.

Customer service and reputation

We evaluate each brand’s customer service through direct interactions via phone, email, and live chat. We prefer brands that don’t put us on hold (at least not for long), don’t make it difficult to reach a real person, and don’t simply read from an unhelpful script. Often, we’re not just testing their service for the sake of testing it—we've dealt with troubleshooting, connectivity problems, and installation issues and needed real help. If we find customer service lacking, we let the company know so they can improve the user experience.

We also examine policies—like warranties, trial periods, and return policies—to determine if they truly put customers first. In addition, we research customer reviews, complaints, and even legal actions to get a complete picture of each brand's reputation.

Overall, the home security industry seems to be meeting people's expectations. According to our survey, around 70% of home security users are satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of their equipment, installation process, and customer service. However, cancellation seems to cause headaches for people and is usually the chief complaint in customer reviews, so we pay close attention to each brand's cancellation policies, procedures, and penalties.
