Connect America’s Medical Alert brand sells—you guessed it—medical alert systems.

Connect America sent us products to test hands-on for this review. We learned that Medical Alert devices are identical to Lifeline devices because both brands are owned by Connect America. There are just minor differences in pricing, with Medical Alert squeaking by as the more affordable option.

However, we weren't impressed with our test results. Between dropped calls, failed GPS tests, and inconsistent fall detection, Lifeline/Medical Alert products didn't meet our standards. Please visit our Lifeline review for an in-depth look at how Connect America devices work (and don't work). We'll keep this Medical Alert review brief.

What does Medical Alert do?

Medical Alert sells devices that connect you to a 24/7 monitoring center at the press of a button. With added fall detection, the devices can even call the monitoring center automatically when it thinks you've fallen.

When a call is placed to the monitoring center, an agent quickly answers and asks if you need help. You can ask them to call a caregiver or neighbor, or you can request emergency services like the police, firefighters, or EMTs. If you're unable to communicate, the monitoring agent understands that you need an ambulance right away.

First responders are sent to the address on file (if you have an at-home system) or to your GPS location (if you have a mobile system). The professional monitors can share the code to your lock box (priced separately) with first responders so they can easily access your home. This saves time and prevents property damage, as they'll otherwise have to break down the door.

Medical Alert provides the basic services you need to feel peace of mind when you're home alone or out running errands. Here's what you can expect:

  • A cellular in-home system and three on-the-go systems, including a smartwatch
  • Optional fall detection in all devices (costs extra)
  • Free app for caregivers

Other Medical Alert costs

Understanding Medical Alert's return and cancellation policies can help you avoid some unexpected costs.

  • There's no trial period.
  • You're expected to pay for at least three months of monitoring (about 90 days).
  • If you cancel before three months but paid for six to 12 months of service, you will get a partial refund minus 3 months of service and a $35 restocking fee.
  • Even though you pay an equipment fee, the equipment isn't yours to keep. It must be returned to Medical Alert "in a satisfactory condition" in order for your cancellation to be finalized. Otherwise, you'll be charged $350.
  • If you miss a payment, you may be charged a late fee.

How does Medical Alert compare to other brands?

Medical Alert offers competitive pricing compared to other medical alert system companies. Its smartwatch is actually one of the most affordable options on the market, even when factoring in the cost of optional fall detection.

However, Medical Alert doesn't hit the mark in other areas:

  • Its 800-foot at-home range is smaller than Medical Guardian's 1,400-foot range and LifeFone's 1,300-foot range.
  • Its at-home 30-hour backup battery has a slightly shorter lifespan than the 32-hour backup battery offered by many competitors.
  • Accessories like wall buttons, voice activated equipment, and fashionable button covers aren't available.
  • A landline system is no longer offered.

If you want a lot of extra services or accessories, we recommend these Medical Alert alternatives:

  • Bay Alarm Medical for fashion accessories and affordable wall buttons
  • Medical Guardian for in-home voice activation and extra smartwatch capabilities
  • LifeFone for daily check-in calls and a long-lasting on-the-go battery

We're scheduled to test Bay Alarm Medical and Medical Guardian in the summer of 2026, so we can't comment yet on how those brands perform compared to Medical Alert. However, LifeFone products passed our tests and are worth looking into.

Does Medical Alert have good customer service?

Medical Alert has a reputation for good customer service overall. It's earned an average rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars from more than 2,000 customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot and Better Business Bureau.

However, Medical Alert often gets slammed for having a difficult cancellation process. This is something we commonly see with other medical alert companies too, and it's unclear why it's such a problem in the industry.

Happy customers say their Medical Alert device worked as expected and allowed them to enjoy greater peace of mind while living at home.

How we reviewed Medical Alert

We reviewed Medical Alert by using all of its devices hands-on. Connect America sent us free products to test, and we returned them after one month.

Our tests checked for the following:

  • Audio quality
  • Answer times
  • GPS accuracy
  • Friendliness of customer service representatives and monitoring center agents
  • Fall detection accuracy
  • Ease of use

We also combed through the company’s terms and conditions, Protection Plan terms, and support pages. Learn more on the SafeWise methodology page.

Final word: We don't recommend Medical Alert

Unfortunately, Medical Alert devices didn't prove reliable during our tests. Based on our personal experiences with the equipment, we can't recommend this brand in good faith. We hope Connect America can address the issues and release more reliable products.
