After testing in my own home, I found that the Kwikset Halo Select is a smart lock that delivers top-tier security, modern aesthetics, and smart-home compatibility without requiring an extra hub.

It’s perfect for homeowners (like me) seeking auto-unlock convenience, remote control, and Matter options to connect your smart devices. However, if you need biometrics like a fingerprint scanner or are on a tight budget, this may not be the smart lock for you.

Here’s what I found during my Kwikset Halo Select review.

Kwikset Halo Select cost

Priced around $275, the Halo Select sits at the top end of premium smart locks. Generally, you can expect to pay around $125 to $300 for a quality smart lock. Even so, there’s a good reason the Halo Select is on the pricier side. It features AAA security, hybrid connectivity, and standout performance that didn’t leave me frustrated and cussing while trying to open my front door. After testing dozens of other smart locks, low frustration is a rare thing to find and worth the money in my books.

The Kwikset Halo Select stands out among top smart locks for its Matter compatibility and broad smart home integration, including Alexa, Google, and Apple HomeKit. It's a great fit for users looking for flexibility across platforms and a clean, modern design. It offers app, key, and keypad entry methods and a decent battery life range. However, open door detection is only available when using Wi-Fi, not Matter.

In comparison, the August Wi-Fi lock is SafeWise’s top pick for its well-rounded features and easy integration with major platforms. The Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi and Wyze Lock Bolt are excellent budget and fingerprint options, offering multiple entry methods and strong smart home compatibility at a lower cost. The Schlage Connect is ideal for smart hub users, with broad integration through Z-Wave and Zigbee.

Meanwhile, the Lockly Secure Pro prioritizes advanced security features, including fingerprint access and a durable design. Each lock has its strengths, but Halo Select leads for those who want future-proof Matter support and reliable auto-unlock features.

Okay, I’ll admit, I missed not being able to open my door with my fingertip. While the Kwikset Halo Select doesn’t have a biometric feature to unlock it with your fingertip (like with the Halo Touch or the Lockly Vision Elite), it does rack up a lot of impressive goodies.

Kwikset Halo Select auto‑unlock and geofencing

One of the standout features of the Halo Select is its reliable auto-unlock functionality. Using geofencing, the lock can automatically unlock as you approach your home, offering a truly hands-free experience. No fingerprint, keys, or code needed!

This was my husband’s favorite feature. As soon as he got close to the lock while holding his phone, the lock unlocked for him. In fact, as soon as he pulled in the carport I would hear it unlock. Our carport is about 10 to 15 feet from our door, so that’s impressive.

Even better, the geofencing works quietly in the background through the app, so you don’t need to open your phone or press any buttons — it just knows when you're near and unlocks your door for you.

The geofencing will automatically lock the door, too, when it senses you leaving the area. You can set up the distance in the app.

You can also set the Halo Select to lock after a certain amount of time automatically. We have it set to autolock after five minutes. The thought process is that the five minutes will give us enough time to pop back in if we forget something, but it will lock up while, or soon after, we pull out of the driveway.

Kwikset Halo Select smart home compatibility

The Kwikset Halo Select offers built-in Wi‑Fi, allowing direct control through the Kwikset app and integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. This makes it easy to lock, unlock, and monitor your door using voice commands or a smartphone, without needing a separate hub.

One unusual compatibility feature is that the lock supports Matter-over-Thread. This gives you additional smart-home compatibility with platforms like Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, and other Matter-ready platforms.

It’s important to mention, though, some of the locks features don’t work with Matter. For example, the door status notifications don’t work.

Here’s a comparison of the features you can use with each:

Wi-Fi

  • Remotely lock and unlock
  • Geofence auto-unlock
  • Smart home voice control
  • Guest access codes
  • Door status alerts
  • Intrusion detection

Matter

  • Extra smart home integration
  • Remote lock and unlock
  • Improved battery life

Kwikset Halo Select codes and access

Kwikset Halo Select supports up to 250 user access codes, making it easy to share access with family, guests, or service providers. Will you really ever need that many? Probably not, but it’s good to know you have the option.

You can create permanent, temporary, or scheduled codes and track activity through access logs. This level of customization gives you precise control over who can enter your home and when — all from the Kwikset app.

If someone tries to use a bad code repeatedly or tries to tamper with your lock, the app will send you a notification. The Halo Select also has a vacation mode that disables the touchscreen altogether. This will keep people out of your home, no matter if they have a code or not. You can leave your keys with your trusted friend who will be watering the plants.

Kwikset Halo Select Smart Lock installation

If you’ve ever switched out a deadbolt before, then this installation won’t be too difficult. It’s a pretty simple learning process, though, if you haven’t.

Basically, you just need to remove your old deadbolt and install the Halo. It takes just four screws, and you probably won’t need any other tools than a Philips screwdriver. The app guides you through the whole process, so make sure to download it and set up your account before you get started.

Final word

If you want a secure, easy-to-install, hub-free smart lock with top-notch auto-unlock and future-ready Matter support, the Kwikset Halo Select is hands-down one of the best options available today.

Why we recommend Halo Select

  • Top-notch security and physical durability.
  • Seamless auto-unlock—so reliable it feels like magic.
  • Future-ready with Matter, plus Wi‑Fi compatibility today.
  • High customization with user codes, geofencing, and app control.

How we reviewed the Kwikset Halo Select

Image: SafeWise

For my Kwikset Halo Select review, I did a hands-on testing of the smart lock in my own home. I also analyzed other real user feedback to assess security, ease of use, connectivity, auto-unlock reliability, installation, and smart-home integration. I took that information and compared it to the dozens of other smart locks I have tested to come up with the best recommendation for my readers.
