Texas’s Safest Cities of 2025

According to our latest State of Safety survey, people in Texas feel less concerned about their overall safety and security than last year. They're also experiencing fewer crimes and package thefts, but gun violence experiences have become more common. With that in mind, it's no surprise that Texans report the second highest level of gun violence concern in the country.

Texas' 20 safest cities reflect a similar trend. Most saw a year-over-year decrease in property crime, but decreases in violent crime were less common. 

We didn't have enough viable data to calculate statewide crime rates this year, but our annual State of Safety survey shines a light on crime experiences and concerns throughout The Lone Star State. 

More than 4 in 10 (42%) Texans say they feel safe in their state, which is much higher than the previous year's confidence level of 28%. However, Texans still feel less safe than the average American, as the national average is 48%. 

Overall, 52% said they worry about their safety on a daily basis, which is a year-over-year decrease of five percentage points. Gun violence and violent crime remain more concerning to residents than property crime and package theft.

Texans are also less likely to believe crime is increasing. In our previous survey, 86% thought crime was on the rise. This time around, 66% believe that's the case. This optimism may help explain why fewer Texans decided to increase their safety and security measures during the reporting period.

Property crime and package theft are less concerning for Texans these days. The percentage of survey participants who personally experienced these crimes decreased year-over-year and fell below the national average.  

• 25% said they experienced a property crime in the 8 months prior to our survey, down from 30% the year before (US 27%).
• Concern about property crime fell from 63% to 56% (US 54%).
• 36% of Texans said they experienced a package theft in the 8 months prior to our survey, down from 38% the previous year (US 37%).
• Concern about package theft fell from 69% to 58% (US 52%). 
• Texans report the tenth highest level of concern about package theft. 
• Texas residents prefer to protect their property with security cameras (51%), security systems (45%), and guard dogs (36%). 
• Texans report the highest usage of security systems nationwide (US 27%). 

• 79% of Texans worry about extreme temperatures, which is the highest percentage nationwide (US 56%).
• Arizonans worry about extreme temperatures as much as Texans.
• 51% said they worry about drought, which is the fourth highest percentage in the nation after New Mexico (59%), California (56%), and Arizona (52%). 
• Texans worry about hurricanes (37%), flooding (47%), earthquakes (20%), and strong winds (59%) more than the average American.
• Texans worry about fire/smoke less than the national average (TX 39%, US 42%).
• 11% said they evacuated due to a natural disaster in the 8 months prior to our survey (US 9%). 

Texans reported fewer personal experiences with violent crime in our latest survey, but their concern is on the rise. In fact, Texans worry about violent crime more than most Americans. 

• 15% said they experienced a violent crime in the 8 months prior to our survey, down from 17% the year before (US 14%).
• Concern about violent crime rose from 62% to 69% year over year (US 59%).
• Residents in only 6 other states worry more about violent crime than Texans. 
• 32% of Texans say they use some form of personal protection (US 35%).
• Texas residents prefer to protect themselves with pepper spray (16%), pocket knives (16%), and firearms (15%). 
• Texans tie with New Yorkers for the highest usage of personal safety apps (TX 8%, US 4%).
• Texans are among those most likely in the US to use stun guns (TX 13%, US 8%).

• 14% of Texans said they personally experienced gun violence in the 8 months prior to our survey, up from 11% the year before (US 11%). 
• Texas ranks 10 out of 50 for the highest level of gun violence experiences nationwide. 
• Concern about gun violence increased from 67% to 73% year over year (US 57%). 
• Texans reported the second-highest level of concern about gun violence in the nation. Only Marylanders (74%) worry more. 
• 31 mass shooting incidents occurred in Texas in 2024. 

For the purposes of this report, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.

• Aggravated assault is usually the most common violent crime in Texas, but Fairview reported zero. 
• Larceny/theft is usually the most common property crime among Texas's safest cities, but San Elizario and Fort Stockton reported more burglaries than larcenies/thefts. 
• San Elizario, Parker, Fulshear, Melissa, Van Alstyne, and Fair Oaks Ranch reported zero murders, rapes, or robberies. 
• Parker, Memorial Village, and Heath reported no motor vehicle thefts. 
• Texas' safest cities were more likely to see year-over-year decreases in property crime than in violent crime.
• San Elizario, Trophy Club, Memorial Villages, Iowa Colony, and Fair Oaks Ranch saw year-over-year declines in both property crime and violent crime.
